Thank you very much. I expected as much when I saw all the streetlights on this morning late. This fiasco has popped my UPS so until I can fix that there's no logging unfortunately :( Gotta protect the computer and my test equipment, as they are very expensive.

Interesting - after Saturday's balls-up, my one UPS is also dead - lasts around 30secs.

I get +/- 1 minute out of mine. I am going to take it apart tonite, assuming there is power tonite and see what's going on. If you want, we can make a plan and I'll have a look at yours aswell and fix it if possible.

I am considering getting a new battery for it and making it run for 4 hours.
Any ideas? It is a regular 600VA.
 
It might be the battery is damaged. Mine is also a 600VA. I am however suspecting the charging circuit has popped and doesn't charge the battery. However it is entirely possible the surge got through to the battery damaging it.
 
For a spike to damage the battery is rare - it would fry the charging circuit first. Batteries are more resilient than the circuitry around them!

To test if your UPS is charging the battery, do the following:

Open it up.

With no mains power connected, check the voltage on the battery.

Then connect the mains, switch it on and check the voltage again.

A flat battery will give you something below 12.5V (on a 12V system) - once you connect the mains it should give you over 13V on the battery.

Some UPS' have a fuse in the charging system that is basically a blade fuse (as used in most cars) soldered onto the board. Check (without mains or batteries connected) if it's ok.

PS!!! Don't mess around on the inside of a UPS unless you have a decent idea about mains voltages etc. There could be open circuits with mains voltages and if you touch those, you can toast yourself.

It does happen. I've seen it in the products I have designed over the years that are currently in the field.

FYI the battery is borked in my UPS, I put a new one in and magically the capacity is back to 28 minutes. The battery doesn't take a charge at all!
 
FYI we have one of the same UPSes here at work.. it did the same thing. Surge got through somehow and damaged the battery. It has been lying here for quite some time it belongs to my colleague.
 
Guys you get Double line conversion long backup ups units that handle multiples of 105 amp hour batteries that protect your systems completely from spikes and surges they produce very stable very clean power that is pure sine and not affected by utility power!
These units can give you up to 8 hours and even more than that depending on the size of your battery bank!

You get the cheaper Inverter units that are square sine wave and give you similar benifets!

They are no maintenance no Fuel or noise and they can last a long time!They are a little pricier but at the current fuel prices of today they will outlast and under cut a generator any day cost wise!

You can run absolutely anything of the Double line conversion units even drills tv's fridges hifis etc...

Pure Sine units can power almost anything and a generator can compliment the longbackup ups unit if the power outage exceeds the backup time of the batteries

Yip we know, I cannot afford that kind of kit right now. The UPS in question was those cheapie Powercom ones you get from Rectron

That ad is for a line interactive UPS, not a double conversion online UPS.

The line interactive runs off the mains when there is power, and quickly detects and switches to the battery when the mains is cut. The double conversion (online) runs permanently from the battery, which gets charged provided the mains is up. Double conversion UPS's are more expensive, but have advantages.

If you are advertising your own product (as seems to be the case), it's rather deceptive to go on about double conversion online UPS's and then post a link implying that that's an example of what you're talking about, when the link is to something worse.

Oh, and to my knowledge these Inverex units are also square wave.

And another thing, please remove "printer" from the ad (or state "inkjet only") - you should NOT run a laser printer off these UPS's (http://www.cameras-scanners-flaar.org/scanning_printing_lighting/APC_UPS_unit_protection.htm).

Sorry but I had to laugh. Your post is so full of inaccuracies that I would be scared to actually buy anything from you, since it's clear that you don't know what you are talking about....
 
I also had to laugh but chose to remain silent I didn't want to have to start defending myself all over a forum as it wastes my time.

Pure sinewave inverters are really expensive. I know this from experience of having had one installed at my previous workplace. It supplied 40kVA pure sinewave, the battery bank was as large as a full 19" rack cabinet and lasted only 22 minutes.

Most UPS units are modified sinewave or squarewave. The reason why laser printers cannot be used is due to the peak draw of the laser printer when it engages the fuser. I've proven this by experiment the current drawn is very high at that point (2kW and above) but of short duration. This was with a HP Laserjet 1018. It caused the UPS to trip out and blew a fuse inside.

A lot of electronic equipment, including microwave ovens are not happy on modified SW or Square wave.

As for the 8 hours back up time and batteries lasting over 10 years, that battery technology hasn't been developed yet :D:rolleyes:

It depends on the microwave. The timer clock might go haywire but we once did warm up food at work on the 2KVA UPS. Back then they used to load-shed in the upper class Sandton areas

I would imagine clocks, and some types of electronics yes. But I can tell you now, my computers, and servers are all quite happy with square wave and the reason is because it is rectified to DC anyway!

As for the 8 hours back up time and batteries lasting over 10 years, that battery technology hasn't been developed yet

I am experiecing problems now in Wilgeheuwel with constant power failures during the evenings. Last 5 days had 3 power cuts during the evenings. Tried to get hold of City Power for some feedback, no luck there :mad:
