Debian GNU Hurd

So how does it add to Debian? They were waiting for the kernel, or are they using Linux kernel? So is it a bunch of apps to add to the Debian fray?

No, Debian is the collection of GNU software that supports the kernel to make a complete operating system. Currently you can get it in two flavours; GNU/Linux (with a Linux kernel) and GNU/kFreeBSD (with a FreeBSD kernel). With the next release of Debian you may be able to get it with a Hurd kernel, i.e. GNU/Hurd, as well.

lol. 25 years to develop something that does the same thing as everything else.

There are 'free' versions of Linux already (Kongoni comes to mind), so what is MORE free about HURD?

No ways I'll spend 25 years developing something and then give it away for free...

25 years... only thing that worry's me is: They planned it 25 years ago, so how is it going to compare to Kde and Windows (Ok, and Os X for the MAC chumps)? Seems like they are bringing a old Dinosaur back to live...

Can see this thread is going to go nowhere quickly without some condescending history lessons. Short of that, the video Revolution OS on youtube does a good job at explaining things here and there.

Hurd is a Kernel Linux is a Kernel. A lot of people call linux based operating systems just linux, I believe it is wrong and a silly marketing tactic. A technical difference between Linux and Hurd is that Hurd is a Micro-Kernel(Like Minix, the OS Linux was developed upon) where Linux is a monolithic kernel. I personally like the idea of Micro-kernels, but monolithic kernels is easier to develop.

Because that was Richard Stallman original plan in the early 1980 and I might not agree with lots of his views but he got most of the people together under the GNU flag to write all the userland software needed for a free open source operating system.

KDE is a desktop environment and Hurd is a kernel you can not compare them. A bad car analogy would be comparing a piston to a car engine.

Thanks for posting the link!

Thanks for the link. I watched the first minute but the intro lost me when the guy dug out his condescending MS employee conspiracy schpiel. I always imagined Linux geeks to be a little more secure in themselves and what they do. "I am your worst nightmare"... been reading too many novels I fear lol.
