Debian Lenny finally out

Congratulations do the Debian team on getting their baby out into the world at last. At least it wasn't as bad as the gap between Sarge and version 4 (forgot the name now)

Useless bit of info, but this is the first OS I've seen that comes with Blu-ray images as well. The entire project is huge, fits onto 2 or 3 Blu-ray disks.

Could someone tell me if i download the i386 version? also must i download this 20gb file or what?

Just had a look and there are 5 dvd's, would i need all 5?

Not necessarily.

One of Debian's claims to fame is having the largest repositories of available software. That 5 dvd download will contain all (or at least a large proportion) of the repos, which include thousands of apps you've never heard of and are not likely to use. (Not that they don't have their uses - but I don't think that they will be useful for you)

Have a look at http://debian.org/distrib/ - it explains the download options and has a link to the available mirrors.

Sweet thanx i thought 20gb for an OS was excessive :p

http://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/

does this look right :)

Yikes still confused chis, cannot find just an install, its linking me to torrents files with dvd 1 2 3 4 5 or 1-a kuk load cd or br, should i d/l just dvd 1? Also am i looking for the i386 or what?

You shouldn't need to download everything, as it is all in the repositories...

Yep, then go down a directory to http://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/5.0.0-live/

You're most likely i386, unless you're planning on installing on an amd 64 system.

Link for Live gnome version: http://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/5.0.0-live/i386/iso-cd/debian-live-500-i386-gnome-desktop.iso

Link for Live KDE: http://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/5.0.0-live/i386/iso-cd/debian-live-500-i386-kde-desktop.iso

Other desktops in http://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/5.0.0-live/i386/ (look for the files that end in .iso)

There didn't seem to be downloads available on mirror.ac.za, unless I'm being stupid.

Its a distribution, so it's an OS and a ***huis vol applications.
22 months between releases is also excessive, for linux. ;)
They aimed for 18-24 months, so being done with 2 months to spare is pretty good considering there are more than 2500 people in the project.

Try the local mirror:
http://debian.mirror.ac.za/debian-cd/5.0.0/

Just CD or DVD #1 will get you going with the basic OS and the more popular applications. If you have a recent PC, it should be safe to go for the amd64 architecture instead of the 32-bit i386 architecture. Don't worry if you have an Intel inside, they licensed the amd64 technology from AMD, so it will run.

Yes, there were some problems with the sync'ing. As far as I know the guys at TENET are trying to get the stuff up to date ASAP and are a bit hampered by a general hammering of Debian mirrors the world over.

YooHooooooo !!!!!!!! :)

I'm waiting for the initial rush to subside before I even attempt a download :) or maybe for Seacom :D

This is quite correct, however, the problems appear to be resolved.

It seems the mirror hasn't sync'd properly yet as only the smaller files are present. No ISO images on the ZA mirror just yet. Also looks like the Live CD mirror (http://debian.mirror.ac.za/debian-cd/5.0.0-live/) has a problem rsyncing as all I see is a file named "USE_HTTP!".

The 5.0.0 data is currently synching.
If all goes well, there should be plenty of images for you to download tomorrow, although it is 140Gb and we may have to stop it during peak traffic tomorrow, so it may only be available from tomorrow night.

I have all the i386 and amd64 CD and DVD images, so if anyone in the Cape Town area wants copies burned, send me PM.
