I was an avid gamer until 5 years ago, am starting to get back into it but am having a hard time finding a decent FPS (Half Life being the high benchmark in my mind). Am an escapist and like a less realistic style game and am a sucker for a decent plot as it unfolds. Fantasy/future settings and their ilk are very relevant to me.

Oh, and because of the limitations of my laptop pre - Crysis specs are a must.

Any suggestions good people?

Not strictly FPS but Deus Ex: Human Revolution is a must if you're after a good plot and tense situations :D
And Dead Space 2 - not so much of a story line but you might enjoy impaling aliens with a javelin gun.

Hmm, some good suggestions here but I fear not many of them will work satifactorily if you have a relatively 'old' laptop. You could try Doom III, Far Cry (the 1st one, not the 2nd which was an epic fail!), Call of Duty 5 (if WWII FPSes are your style). Although not strictly an FPS, Dark Messiah of Might & Magic was a good game with a good story. It was played from an FPS perspective but had a more RPG element to it. Otherwise, if it's mindless shooting you're after, you can try Painkiller, Left for Dead or Jericho.

Good luck...

That first farcry made me crap my pants... it's an epic game.

For MP then CS:GO & BF3, otherwise Borderlands 2. Will push your lappy but fantastic games to say the least.

Definitely Bioshock for the story.
Deus Ex is also really fun, play the first one if you haven't yet.

This guy has good taste! Those were some of my favourite games you just mentioned. Dark Messiah was great! You could add max payne 1 - 3 to the list too.

If you like Half-Life you might like Black Mesa Source.
It's a Mod that was released fairly recently which is a remake of the original Half-Life.

This. Dark Messiah was awesome. Dishonoured is an amazing game, and shouldn't be resource heavy as a new game.

Just try Mirror's Edge.

Awesome gentlemen and lady's (assuming there are ladies on the internet and its not just a myth) thanks for the great response. Will defiantly follow these up and see where they lead. Of particular interest would be Bioshock, Dark Massiah, Far cry (the second instalment bored me near to tears, but apparently the first one has monsters and such?), Mirrors Edge (havent heard of it but googles a wonderful thing) and Deus. Also gonna follow up on Mass Effect, Dead Space and Max Payne for different moods.

By crazy coincidence have been jamming F.E.A.R. for a week now Mr Smith, and am digging the slowmo and combat very much. And played Doom III recently but must admit was sorely disappointed, but still I seem to be in the minority on that one.

And loved Borderlands (on my friends Xbox) but hated the way it ended, actually ruined the game a lil for me, but again minority.

Am also a RPG nut and going to start playing Fall Out 3 later today, any tips on character builds?
