Decent media box?

Depends on your usage. I need my box to output at 4k 60Hz resolution without jitter and proper audio passthrough to my amp. Mine fails on both counts in Kodi. On my bedroom TV which is only 1080p with no passthrough the boxes work as they should.
So yes, if you're wanting super high end shell out R4000 for a shield. For the rest of us the MiBox does what needs to be done very satisfactorily.

I still can't decide between the My TV Box, or the LIT Box, or a ChromeCast, I wish there was a definite winner

Lit Box & MiBox > Chromecast

Do you really wanna fiddle around with your phone while watching tv? It does not project a UI onto the tv. Every time you want to pause/+ or - volume you have to fiddle with your phone. It's a schlep.
That's just one of many areas where a dedicated box is better than a chromecast.

I hear you, but a Android box Remote or a phone is pretty much the same in my eyes.. I agree with having a UI is better.

I use an Apple TV 4th gen - works pretty damn perfectly.

Mi box will not require you to side load apps etc.
It supports netflix/dstv out of the box via the play store.
It also runs android tv so the remote does not suck.
As for android 7/8 who cares, it makes no difference to your video.

The Mi Box and LIT Box operates almost identically the same. The LIT is better imo because of the LAN port.
The MiBox has bluetooth remote with voice search. My kids can't type "cookies swirl c" in youtube, but they can say it :)

New LIT boxes have the remotes with a mic for voice search too.

What about Roku or Amazon Fire Stick?

They look like good buys these days?
I'm not sure if they have DSTV Now app available for them. Not a biggie for many people, but a deal breaker for me. Also, I have a bunch of DVDs ripped to ISO which I play off an external HDD so I need a USB port for that.
