Hi guys

My UPS is busted and I've been looking around today for one, maybe 2. I have 2 machines that need to be kept alive. To give you an idea of my needs:

  • One is a phenomII with a Radeon 4850, the other is an AthlonX2 with rubbishy onboard graphics
  • Both have 3 HDDs and a DVD writer
  • I use 1 screen between the 2 of them

I only need a few minutes of power.

I don't necessarily want the best of the best but I also don't want a piece of crap that is going to destroy the hardware. The last PSU I had was a cheapo Numeric and I'm not overly keen on going back to them.

Anybody have any suggestions on where I should look to get a good price or what manufacturers I should be looking at (other than the usual APC)?

Esquire sells the Apollo range which is excellent and well-priced, they also used to sell the Sparta or Unique which is the same as the Numeric that Sahara sells and those are horrible , Graham frm Millerton branch told me that they stopped selling them a while ago due to the issue they had with them , i would recommend the Apollo , APC is just too expensive.

I got one of those 1200va ones from matrix for R750, comes with software to auto shut down your pc as well. It's worked perfectly for me over the months I've had it, and saved me a few times with power outages, etc.

APC, you pay more but after 10 years when your UPS is still working you know where those extra RRRs went.

Especially APC Smart UPS range which are intended for server environment and can go on forever.

OK thanks for the advice guys. I had looked at the Apollo range and I think I might go for one of those. Inverex is great but I don't need hours and hours I just don't want the machines crashing if Eskom decides to cut the power. The Numeric I had had such schit software I couldn't get it to interface with my machine to get it to shut down when the UPS kicked in. Hopefully Apollos are different.

Either that or APC but man they are expensive. :(

Corsair 800w silent pro,

They are pretty good.
UPS not PSU :p

On that note,I use PowerAlertNMS to send a notification to all systems connected to UPS's to shut down gracefully ( USB connection and software usually means only connected machine can shut down

I've been using a couple of Tedelex 1200 IntelliPower units for the last 3 years, no problems - up to 12 hours runtime with my PhenomII X6 PC and Opteron server.

+1 for APC. Their after-sales service is also excellent.

Once again, basic APC model (these are not expensive), don't look anything else.

Isn't that Tripplite software?

EDIT: oh wait nevermind I see they license it free of charge. Cool thanks for the tip :)

Like I said though I only need a couple of minutes. I just don't want them abruptly shut off is all.

I know but they are expensive. Just a small one is over R1000 or so from Takealot. :(

Smart are expensive. Backup pro is not, still offering a good protection. I prefer such simple APC device over other brand complicated on-line unstable systems at reduced price.

oops, sorry read them words wrong :(

We running an Riello Sentinel Pro 3000VA - two computers running will give us 8 Hrs, and communicates with the PC to auto shut-down encase I'm partying somewhere :D

Who is selling them in SA?

I ask because from what I can see the Backup pros are still several thousand rands each for one big enough to hold both machines up with a little extra (approaching what... 800W). Alternatively I could try to get a small one for each machine but even then still expensive. :(

Stupid money! :(

I only really need a few minutes of power. One of these machines runs all night and I just don't want it suddenly losing power. I've been thinking about it and what I really need is a UPS that will catch the machine when power goes out and then make the machine shutdown safely.

DCC (Drive Control Corporation). You need dealer account, but if you ask for product specialist, they will assist you.

I think one 650VA can up two machines like yours for few minutes. They can be overloaded little bit. Specification gives VA rating for given full backup time.

Alternatively ask nicely, I can check specification of new devices. It doesn't need to be pro series. You don't need AVR and other specialities.
