Deciding on my new tv....

No it won't. And it won't happen on plasma these days either (20/30 minutes). If you have static images displayed for hours on end and you have your plasma set to higehr than normal brightness/contrast, you might get some image retention that goes away after a few minutes after changing channels. Like I say, I've had the last 3 cricket tests on for more than 10 hours a day with opaque static images on my plasma - and not even one bit of image retention...

Ok cool. My tv is pretty new and I don't intend getting another one for the next few years.
 
If I run my laptop on a plasma fhd screen, it would still look good hey? I'm still deciding, however I'm thinking the ps50c550 looks like the best option for watching movies, some series, some playstation and extending my laptop screen. Am I right or would lcd work better if I want to use my laptop on it as well?

Rather go for LCD. The plasma will look great but you don't want to run the risk of burning in the plasma screen with static images like Windows Start bar. If you're working in Windows/whatever OS for a long time, then the Start/whatever bar will be there for a long time. Plasma is not meant for displaying static images over long periods of time.

If you're watching SD TV/sport, and not too much laptop work, then you should go for plasma, as plasma is superior for SD TV/sport.

Of course if you're using your laptop to play movies, series etc., then you would have no problems with plasma.

Thats what I do... I have an HTPC and auto-hide the start bar, and then have the screen saver on if I leave, or just change the channel - its that simple. I would never do work or something like that on my plasma, that'd be dumb. But as an HTPC, for series and movies I'm not worried, plus it still looks awesome.

I do get what Dolby says though, that plasma owners will 'always' have that thought of IR and burn-in at the back of their minds. But to be honest, its not that difficult to avoid it if you have any sort of intelligence greater than mayonnaise. Simple as changing channels, or having a shortcut to start a screensaver.

Exactly. And you don't really even have to have image burn-in in the back of your mind, since it's been greatly improved on. Image retention, yes.

Now that you mention that you won't be working on the PC much (where static images are likely to cause problems), and you will be using it to play movies/series (and when you leave it it'll have a screen saver which will prevent any IR), i would fully recommend you go for plasma.

I recommend PS42C430 42" at about R5800, or PS50C430 50" at about R8000. These are HD/720p TVs, not full HD/1080p. But it doesn't sound like you'll need full HD. Check out the other thread I started for owners of those TVs.
 
I didn't have time to read all the opinions posted here, but I did decide on the ps50c550, and bought it today. Got it at Game for R10995, cheapest I could get it here. I didn't play full hd stuff yet, but I must say I'm really impressed.
 
Just something else, I copy dvd's from a friend to my external HDD. But if I want to watch it through the tv it wont play like a dvd, just the single dvd video files, one at a time. Is there a way to play these from a HDD, other than to convert them to avi or video format?
 
I've had the 42c450 since March 2010. I'm very happy with my reasonable priced buy. the biggest advantage over c430 is the side usb input which allows playing of avi files from my 500gb portable hdd via media player function of tv. Also came with fm transmitter, which works well. Btw: just downloaded 3rd firmware update which can be self-installed :) .

You could keep them as .vob as just join them?

I remember there's you can actually do it in DOS with a few key strokes .... ie 1.vob+2.vob+3.vob=main.vob ... I'm too lazy to Google :/

Nice, enjoy! Some users have attempted calibrating the set and have posted their settings somewhere here. Apparently out of box picture can be improved drastically on.

I also have it, didn't know it could play videos via the USB. :) Got a Mede8er though. Got mine for R6700.

Please check out the users thread near the top of the forum, would like to hear your comments.

Can you pls explain a bit?


I saw somewhere that it helps if you set dvd shrink to make 1 big vob file, not a lot of chunks. So I've set my home pc to "not split the files to 1 gig chunks", but it still did split it into a lot of chunks. Any idea maybe on how to do that?
 
Yep, updated to version 1101.2 last night, I'm not sure what the changes are though. The media player seems more responsive and a few cosmetic changes to the menu system.
