Deciding on my new tv....

Cool. Look forward to hearing your findings. Yeah the high end Pannies are rated best TVs in the world AFAIK. Plasma really is almost too good to be true, considering the quality and size for the price. :D

Something else to remember that's quite important - cinematics and cut scenes would "refresh" the plasma cells that have been displaying the static images.

Yeah my SO's parents have had a plasma for quite a while and that one now has the little red dots going when blacks are displayed. We currently still have a rear projection tv which also had the possibility of burn in problems back in the day. Static images have always been a no no. Well If I can get hold of a 55" sammy at a good price then I'll definitely consider it. It all depends on the prices I suppose but thats all for another thread :)

On the Frontosa price list, plasmas go 42 > 50 > 58 > 63", of which the latter two are priced R38,000 and R53,000 respectively including 10% dealer mark-up. I'm guessing this will be a no-no with the SO. :D

Are we talking Sammies...? Thats a hell of a jump in price from the 50" to the 58" then....?

Main issue I have with this plasma is reflections. Don't notice much when you're watching and focussed on the action etc but very easy to focus on anything reflecting if the rest of the room isn't 100% dark.

So - you either take Postman with low-mid plasma (never owned anything else), who contradictsa himself constantly and gives information that most experts cringe at ... Or take Dolby who's owned both technologies, used them for a myriad of tasks and generally speaks sense ;)

Is he really saying that no LCD can beat his R6k plasma or is he saying that you get a hell of a lot more bang for your buck with plasma and it's the way to go if you are on a tight budget and need decent picture quality. Because a R6k 42 inch Samsung plasma will blow anything in the same price class away.

I'm not sure what he's saying ; one minute plasma beats the same price ... then double ... them triple ... then we go back to square one again. He said a high end LCD does not compare to his plasma.

Since you're the only one saying this, I will be taking your claims with less than a pinch of salt. Since 10+ forumites bought plasmas in December alone, and like 5 of them have thanked me, I will continue what I do - must be working!
 
hi,

If you're going to be using your TV screen to watch blu-rays, play 1080p games, or use it occasionally as a monitor for your PC, then full HD is the way to go.

If you are going to watch DVD's and normal DSTV then a Plasma suits your needs just fine. Even if you do get an HDPVR, Plasma will still be fine, as broadcasting of the HD channels is at 720p I believe, and not 1080p as the latter requires too much bandwidth.

This said the Samsung plasmas are pretty good from what I've seen. Personally I own a Sony 1080p 40" screen -mainly because i use it for gaming, blu-rays, and as a monitor on occasion.
