Hi guys,

I am currently in Vienna outskirts, wolfs graben.

There is an ADSL provider called A1 with which I am signed up (was signed up more than a decade ago by my grandfather who knows nothing of the modern Internet anymore at 92).

I got a new router yesterday in order to replace the really old speed touch one (it doesn't even have LAN ports, pure modem) due to thinking I might have line issues and not being able to check line stats.

So they told me when I asked that the max they could do for me was 5Mbps and refused to say what my attentuation or SNR was, I did manage to get them to tell me it was 3.2km though.

I should still be able to get the 8/1 I am paying for.

Should I fight this, as I want to use this to skype with them from South Africa and nothing else.

Line stats attached (from the new router)
Code:
Uptime:	0 days, 20:18:51

DSL Type:	ITU-T G.992.1 Annex A (ADSL over POTS)

Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]:	512 / 4.992

Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [MB/GB]:	137,72 / 7,46

Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]:	12,3 / 19,9

Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]:	14,0 / 25,5

SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]:	24,0 / 12,3

System Vendor ID (Local/Remote):	TMMB / ----

Chipset Vendor ID (Local/Remote):	BDCM / BDCM

Loss of Framing (Local/Remote):	0 / -

Loss of Signal (Local/Remote):	0 / -

Loss of Power (Local/Remote):	0 / -

Loss of Link (Remote):	-

Error Seconds (Local/Remote):	512 / -

FEC Errors (Up/Down):	1 / 0

CRC Errors (Up/Down):	0 / 684

HEC Errors (Up/Down):	- / 1.223
Thing is it has to be stable, can't have drops, for what speed should I push?

Could we get back on track? My personal opinion is to push for max, but I am not sure due to it being ADSL and not ADSL2+.

Set your router's DSL type to 'Auto' and it should negotiate the best protocol. Otherwise I'm not sure what you want to fight about? Your line stats looks fine to me.

Can't, they only have ADSL due to exchange.
Talking to them is like speaking to a wall. They keep telling me no, it's 3.2km. Kept asking to speak to a more technically inclined person, she says to me nope, I am tech support. Maybe because I was using English terms, going to translate them and then call again tomorrow. Linie dämpfung for attentuation lol, makes so much more sense to begin with.

Still 25.5dB attentuation means I can't be more than 2km from the exchange right? I should easily be able to max 8Mbps, that's what I am trying to do, in order to get more upload for Skype.

Also the Internet is dropping when using the phone/the SNR drops, so getting a new filter delivered from them as well (part of the pauschale/flat rate every year my grandparents have been paying for ten years, yet never having received new equipment. Heck, they had a 500MB cap till I stepped in and got uncapped for cheaper due to them being on an old package. I hate this company, nearly worse than telkom.)

Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]: 14,0 / 25,5

These stats are good enough to get you a 15-20mbps ADSL2+ line. I currently have downstream attenuation of 26dB, and can sync at 20mbps on the ADSL2+ profile at my local Telkom Exchange. Distance is about 2km. Your distance must be around the same as mine. 3.2km doesn't sound right.

You should be able to go for the 8mbps down / 1mbps up ADSL (not 2+) connection with no stability problems, based on your attenuation figures. Remember to setup Dnynamic DNS on the router, and enable remote login, so that you can monitor the connection and line stats from anywhere.

I'm going to go argue with them again, going to see if I can just ask for a speed increase and if not going to the supervisor.

Gravedigging my own thread.
I got a filter set up (bought one from Telkom last week and brought it up here), the new line stats are:
Code:
DSL-Typ:	ITU-T G.992.5 Annex A (ADSL2+ over POTS)

Bandbreite (Senden/Empfangen): [kbps/kbps]:	517 / 4.970

Übertragene Daten (Gesendet/Empfangen) [MB/GB]:	7,49 / 4,12

Ausgabeleistung (Senden/Empfangen) [dBm]:	12,2 / 18,9

Leitungsdämpfung (Senden/Empfangen) [dB]:	16,1 / 37,0

Signal-Störabstand (Senden/Empfangen) [dB]:	22,0 / 11,0

Should still be able to hit 8Mbps? Supposedly the system auto-regulates over 72 hours and if the SNR is stable it will increase the speed. Going to call them if it doesn't increase until Monday (if you guys still think I can get 8Mbps).

EDIT: Sorry, didn't set the stats in english:

Code:
DSL Type:	ITU-T G.992.5 Annex A (ADSL2+ over POTS)

Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]:	517 / 4.970

Data Transferred (Sent/Received) [MB/GB]:	9,16 / 4,18

Output Power (Up/Down) [dBm]:	12,2 / 18,9

Line Attenuation (Up/Down) [dB]:	16,1 / 37,0

SN Margin (Up/Down) [dB]:	21,9 / 10,8

System Vendor ID (Local/Remote):	TMMB / ----

Managed to finally get it up:

Code:
Bandbreite (Senden/Empfangen): [kbps/kbps]:	773 / 8.743

Übertragene Daten (Gesendet/Empfangen) [MB/GB]:	5,07 / 4,04

Ausgabeleistung (Senden/Empfangen) [dBm]:	12,1 / 19,1

Leitungsdämpfung (Senden/Empfangen) [dB]:	16,1 / 37,0

Signal-Störabstand (Senden/Empfangen) [dB]:	14,5 / 8,8
The SNR should increase in summer once the weather becomes more mild, currently heavy frost covering the places in the shade, but it's still a good and stable SNR.
