I recently found that some of my SAIX analogue users are connecting at lower and lower speeds - 17-20 Kbs with a 56Kbs modem! Do other users experience the same? Do we have any explanation for this? (It is not a bad line, modem or computer.)

I'm soooooo happy to see that I wasn't the only one! LMFAO :D
After complaining to the right people in the highest places I'm now getting constant speeds of 50-52k on my laptop which is still 56k dial-up.
At first they said it was a hardware problem on my side and the normal "if the techie comes out and it is not a sperm bank (Telkom) problem, you will pay for it" rule was explained!
After reassuring them that I'm a fully qualified IT and electronics engineer with 20 years+ experience, they sent out someone to investigate.
Against my better knowledge, I was told that it was a line problem and that it had been resolved... ha ha ha
Why then is my neighbour still suffering the same fate? We are both connected to the same pole!
Call me paranoid, but i'm sure they cap bandwidth on dial-up user accounts (especially the high useage ones) to try and switch them over to the mega expensive ADSL accounts.
To test my theory, I dialled up with an MWeb account and got speeds in excess of 48k. Swithcing back and forth between this and my Telkom account six times in two hours, it was confirmed! Telkom gave me a maximum connect speed of 28k...
A day after my connection log results was e-mailed to TelkomSA together with my query, I mysteriously got back a quick 50k+ connection.

Here's one for you to chew on Deb!

Still SAIX and connection speed!

I experienced the same when I saw that someone else dialling through the same exchange but to Mweb got a full connection with all compression working giving a connection speed of 115K. I also requested one of my users to monitor the connection speed and in varies from the same telephone and the same modem between 20k and 42k on the same day!

Slower speed = more time spent online = more money for Telkom.

Their lines are in tatters & being held together by sheer luck in many areas across the country. Slack installations and poor workmanship account for many of the problems. Sometimes especially after a rainy period connection speeds can drop dramatically.. water gets into ducting & all kinds of places and messes around with your line quality.

Newer areas generally have excellent connection speeds, I used to connect at 52Kbps in Parklands when I was still on dialup.. would have moved to ADSL but I would have to be on some serious medication to be prepared to fork out ~R1,000 for a paltry 512k connection with 3GB cap.

You are sooooooooooooo right! Slower speed are mostly on the line and Telkom will say "but its not the line"...yeah yeah yeah!!!

Its always telskommel! I speak from experiance. Ever since I had my 9.6kbps modem in the cretacious period, it was never a faulty pc, spyware, adware, phreakers or whatever. If I can tell you how many times I have formatted various pc's, scanned, reloaded drivers etc I could write a book. In 9999999.999999999999999999% of the times it came down to TeLskommels, cabling, exchange, rusty ole connections, earthing and last but not least them screwing my line connection up with a neighbour or some other Bull. Its always Telskommel.

So that's why the freaking hell my connection dropped to 24kbps in the past two weeks. There is deffinitely nothing wrong with my connection, as I've been connecting through @lantic for the past 5 months at a consistent speed of 49kbps.

I'm doing a proper complaint on Monday, coz everytime I call 10212 to complain, they tell me to hang up so they can test the line. They promised twice to call me back and I never heard of them.

Monday, I'm getting a fault report reference number, and I'm starting to record names and keep track of every call I make.

I'm so sick and tired of their crap. The day the SNO provides services to people like me at home, I'm moving and I'll never Telkom again.

I have an interesting one: I live in Moorreesburg just north of Cape Town (hub of the universe)

I connected a Duxbury 56K external modem to my pc and dialled in at 115Kb

I then went back to my internal 56k modem and cannot get more than 43Kb out of it.

Can this be real, or did my system hit a wobbly?

I would guess the 115kb is the speed of comunication between your pc and the external modem while the 43kb is the modem line speed.

Internal modems always show the actual connect speed, whilst externals show the speed configured in modem properties. (usually 115k by default).
If you want to get a true speed reading, use a utility like DU Meter from Hagel Technologies.
