Declining intelligence

Learn a new thing, such as a language, stimulate yourself intellectually, such as learning whole new topics, such as molecular biology or colonial history etc.

Sometimes I can just stare at an object for minutes at a time with nothing going on inside my head.
I've had that my whole life. You can train yourself to snap out of it.

My question is whether there are ways to improve intellectual agility and to make your brain more nimble.
The only know method of increasing Gf (Fluid intelligence) is dual n-back, which you can do for free (download from sourceforge). Latest research shows it doesn't work for all though. Don't bother with any other "brain trainers"...they have no scientific backing.

Increase intake of omega 3, 6 and 9 I think it was. Take a B Complex supplement and a multi vit.

Exercise daily, with heart rate going into the exercise range (this depends on age, so I can't tell you)....basically it should be pumping fast.

Looking back at my past work I believe I used to be more intelligent than I am now.

It feels like my brain is getting slower and slower.

A doctor told me this is a type of dementia associated with depression of which I have a history.

This apparently.

Start playing linux games, many are puzzle based, and will help train your brain in to focussing again.

http://projecteuler.net/ - This will train your brain, and you can use it to learn a programming language
http://radiolingua.com/shows/french/coffee-break-french/ - This will help you learn French, which will train your brain in a different way.

Firstly stop drinking or taking drugs it destroys your brain cells :D

Secondly do crosswords or suduko or whatever makes your brain have to think a lot to stimulate it

Its a universal problem and the main cause is that we have stopped reading.
The ABA did a survey which states that 70% of the population stop reading (literate material) when they leave high school.
Blame can be levelled squarely on that big black box in your living room.

What about the people who did not read in high school like me what percentage were they :p

The stats apply to those who stop reading AFTER high school.
Here are some interesting and shocking reading stats coming out of the USA:

This.

But beware of the inherent dangers before you start reading. Too many people start reading without considering that it'll inevitably get them to thinking.

And we all know where that leads.... Atheism.

Perhaps declining intelligence isn't so bad. Do we really want to think? Isn't that why we have a representative form of democracy, so someone we elect can think for us?

But enough, my head hurts already. Surely there's something on the telly.

Play video games. Many types of games effectively require you to memorise information and think quickly.

I'd like to respond to this, but I don't read anymore, so I have no idea what it says.

The rule is that you should only read about things related to your area off professional expertise.Everything else is a waste of time.

Play chess.

QFT.

Stupid rule that. Some of us are in jobs to pay the bills and aren't at all interested in the field. I am a creative writer/artist working in IT, who spends a lot of time reading books on psychology, finance and buddhism. Reading is key, as long as it helps you grow and you find it interesting.

Also, try and get enough sleep.

There are part time, short courses at WITS. Maybe go do something that interests you, it will get you back in the thinking mode. Also as already stated look at your diet you might have something missing. I don't eat fish so I take an Omega 3 supplement, I can definitely feel my mind becoming more blurry when they run out.

Quite interesting stats now I know why they are clueless when we ask them where other countries are which aren't in america

Chess is boring how do people enjoy it?

The more you know about chess the more interesting it is... So, read about chess.

Chess is boring how do people enjoy it?

I know people who say rugby or soccer is boring. It depends on your level of interest in the game/sport and also your level of understanding of what's happening. To some chess is just a (boring) game, to other it's a work of art.

Got to love the human mind!
