Decode Drivers Licence Barcode

Yes, the barcode at the back of the drivers' license contains your photograph, which is the same as the one on the front, your name, surname, ID Number, drivers' license information, etc.

I know this is coded in some 2D format.

I saw a company last year selling a 2D barcode reader (not connected to anywhere) where you can scan the drivers' license and view all the information on a small LCD screen or even a computer.

It was marketed to vehicle financing and car dealerships.

I remember it was quite expensive, but not sure if anyone else could decode the code.
 
Once decoded, I only get 70 bytes. That's just about enough for the information, never mind the photo.

Were you able to extract the text information from the drivers license? I'm trying to accomplish the same but need some kind of decoding key. I would love some help around this.
 
Would the 'code' be linked your profile ID on the eNatis DB? I doubt there is much information on the physical card. I mean how would it store 'live' information on your traffic fines etc?
 
I know they do this at some of the security estates too... the guy has a mobile card reader and scans your drivers license. Much easier than filling in the visiting roster.

I got as far as extracting garbage data - was only for fun, so I got bored!

From what I understand, the static info is encoded into the barcode. At least more than just an ID.

Yes, there is a lot of data contained in the barcode:

1. photograph (which is the same as the one on the front)
2. Name and Surname
3. ID Number
4. Drivers' License Number and Date of Issue

And some other info as well.

I'm amazed that it can store enough data to have a image included.
 
Doesn't seem nearly big enough. You'd need 5-10kb at least for the photo, unless it's a seriously low res black and white version.
 
I have a hard time believing that the picture is stored in the barcode, but if that is the case, then well done eNatis.It would prevent a person from taking a license apart, sticking their photo on the old photo and re-laminating.

I do know for a fact that the photograph is indeed stored in as part of the barcode.

I have seen a number of these devices in action and once scanned, the information and the image is indeed displayed on the device.

I met some of these people when they marketed their products to vehicle dealerships about 5 years ago.

I have to admit that these devices may be quite useful for a person who cannot identify a fraudulent drivers' license by looking at it. However, they are very useless for those who can.
 
Your picture and details are stored in eNatis.

The card just contains your unique identifier. Simple, really :)
