it has come to my attention that we pay for the data used to download maps on GPS integrated phones.

Is there no Dedicated apn's such as for vlive wich is used for GPS data only? could this perhaps be in the pipeline? Or is there any software for specific handsets that install full sets of maps on the handset so you do not download any maps?

If there is no better solution i might just cann the idea of a GPS enabled handset as this would be an utter waste?!?!

Roux mentioned the N82 can run Garmin software? Would this still need to download maps? Whats my solution guys? I saw the Omnia mentions continuous subscription on GPS service? Would this one Include maps on the Device?

I know data is probably the biggest new thing for SP's but on the GPS service it would be a cool idea to have a Profile that does not charge specifically for the GPS data?

Or perhaps a montly subscription (Similar to BB) for the GPS Profile?

I would assume the BB maps are included in the BB APN. But all other GPS' data will be charged at your relevant data rate.

How much data do you use a month on maps?

I dont know i dont use it yet, im looking to upgrade and get a C905 just because of the GPS, but i know those maps chow data on pc, specially google maps. and with the hsdpa on the phone itll chow the data just as fast.

thats actually a good idea, thing is im on a TopUP315 now, and i dont really wanna go on a Billed Contract. Can BB bolt onto a topup? i guess ill have to have a chat with my friendly salesperson at Vodacom4u

Hi Vincent. I think that's a very good option (N82 and perhaps Garmin app). Also, you don't have to worry about data usage on the Nokia phones with integrated GPS - you can set them to work without a network connection. My brother did that on his N82 and is satisfied with the GPS performance. He's using the built-in maps, though.

I think you should also be able to download the latest Garmin maps using your PC and just transferring the maps using the phone's data cable. Not 100% on that, but the guys from Garmin will be able to help.

Hope that helped.

Garmin maps are loaded onto your phone, so no downloading takes place.
There is no cost for obtaining the GPS satellite signals either, so the only cost is the initial outlay for the Garmin XT software.

I use it and it is great

What TimTDP is trying to say that there are two kinds of mobile maps:
- The first kind (like Garmin, Route66, etc) you download/install your map once only. If you install the maps from the purchased CD via PC there are not data charges. Obviously, you will incur data charges when you download the first map or update your maps every say 6-12 months.
- The second type (like Vodafone Sat Nav and BB Maps) calculates and downloads routes (not whole maps) every time this is requested/needed. I'm not sure how big the data chunks for these type of requests are, but based on the time it takes from request to display, I can't think that it is very big.

Oh, and I have used both types.

So have I and I like the former when I go to an area where there might not be cell coverage (but then I normally used a dedicated Garmin) and the latter when I'm in town as I'm always assured of the latest maps.

Getting automatic updates of city and town maps are handy as it is these roads that change all the time. Nothing as frustrating when your GPS insists you must go up a one-way! :)

So can someone point me in the right direction so long as to the purchase of the Garmin Software for the N82?

Would This function on the SonyEricsson platform? Or perhaps the HTC?

Anyone have a link to a pricing guide for a local dealer supplying this?

Maybe take a look at the Samsung i900 (Omnia). It's got an integrated Garmin GPS (for life).
