Defending the super rich

I wanted to read the article, but I'm too busy being Super Rich to care what the plebs think. Now if you'll excuse me, I'm off to wipe my ass with a $100 bill before burning it in front of a homeless person, because that's how I roll.

Personally I've been more impressed with Bill Gate's second innings than his first. I did not find MS-DOS to be a contribution to the OS's we had (which had basically the same features - often better), or MS-Word any better than (say) Wordperfect 5.1 (and many other examples) and in the meantime we were clearly stiffed by licence fees for so many years which we had to pay because others were using his stuff.

I was more impressed that Bill Gates got some focus going on HIV and Malaria in Africa

You weren't getting stiffed... you were paying for eradication of malaria and TB and got free software with your donation. :D

“Using their own numbers, I did the calculation that if you confiscated every single Dollar from the 86 wealthiest people, each one of the poorest three-and-a-half billion would get $500.”

Sad thing is that next day their $500 will be gone.

You do know that $500 being spent in one day is better for the economy than it sitting in someone's bank account or invested in savings etc over a long period of time

You are obviously aware that this money is not actually in savings accounts? Most of it is the market value of shares these people own in companies. Now if you distribute all these shares amongst everyone on earth and the next day the poor sells it what do you think will happen to the value of these shares.

This is the great folly of the 1% and the absolute ridiculousness of focusing on them.

I don't see a problem with rich folk *having* wealth per se

The problems come when they use their wealth to leverage business deals, markets and politics to go their way, thereby skewing the rules of the game to their advantage

Clearly the US and European Banker mentality finally spilled over to our shores.

I s'pose we could look at this from another angle .....

The ANC/SACP/COSATU spend a lot of their time defending the super dumb .... and I have no problem with the super dumb pr se...

But when they get into parliament or positions of political power .... thats when the problems come in. :p

A person who is super rich, like the ones mentioned in the article, wouldn't even waste time to pick up a $100 bill if he dropped it.

With a worth of $72 billion, a 6% rate of return would earn Gates roughly $114.16 per second he is alive, making it a poor investment for Bill Gates to bother picking up a $100 bill if he dropped it.
