Bought an LTE Speedstick + Mobile Ten package on Friday.

I am within your LTE coverage area ( I'm just off Rivonia Road, Morningside ).

My complaints are as follows :

1. I can have 97% signal strength one second, and 0% a second later?
2. I spend more time trying to get the damn Speedstick to get more than 0% signal strength than on the internet.
3. When I am connected, the signal drops to 0% so often I'm off more than I'm on. Then the elusive hunt for signal begins all over again. Like I said, from 97% sweetspot to 0% just like that.
4. I pay for an LTE speedstick and SIM but LTE is not enabled by default? Seriously? How does this make any sense? I called for provisioning of LTE on Friday night, still no LTE! My Vodacom iPhone 5S has LTE no problem.

I can't see why I shouldn't take you up on your Double your Money Back offer? But I guess I'm stuck with a R1600 LTE Speedstick that couldn't pick up signal from 1m away from it?

FYI - I reconnected twice while writing this post!

Tower issue? Have you tried other towers / travelling? I used to use Afrihost Mobile in Rivonia a lot and there were no signal issues. This was a while ago though.

Is it not possible that the speedstick is faulty? Or even possibly the SIM card?

I've tried it at my office around 2km's away. Right next to the MTN Store. Same story.

Besides, I bought it for use at home while Telkom mess around with my VDSL thinking I had good LTE coverage.

On the phone with Afrihost support. Clueless, don't even know how to provide support for the built-in software on the Speedstick.

I've gone from 99% signal to 0% signal 3 times while on the phone with this guy, and he argues it's only been disconnected once when he asked me to unplug it and plug it back in. PLEASE!

My session management shows how many times I've had to reconnect, not even all of them.

Then I get sung a story that it's because of the weather? How does that explain having the same issue on Saturday?

Still no bloody LTE either

Ask them for a replacement dongle and replacement SIM card, or you will enforce their double-your-money back guarantee. The guarantee excludes hardware though, but the modem should be under warranty in any case.

Did you check MTN signal before ordering the device and SIM? I can't say I did when I ordered mine, but there are a few people in my area on MTN, so I assumed it was fine.

Were you able to update the firmware for the device when you got it? Something I did. Not sure if it would help, but it's worth a try.

When I got my LTE phone a few months ago, I set it for LTE but signal used to come and go. I used to miss calls sometimes at that moment when the device switches from no LTE to a stronger 3g signal or even edge. I stopped using the LTE option and used 3g instead which was more stable.
But I see that LTE coverage is now more reliable for me.

Does your device have an LTE-only option? Or is there an LTE-preferred option? If it's set on LTE only then it won't switch to a slower setting, which could explain your 0%.

I understand your paying for a service that is not available most if the time, take it up with MTN.
