I have a Dell Precision M90 .. top spec, running XP SP3. I regularly use two defrag programs, Ultimate defrag and Auslogics (both freeware utilities). I do not use MS defrag as a norm, but that also doesn't defrag those 3 files.

After defrag I am always left with 3 defragmented files, totaling about 1.6 GB.

How do I identify what these 3 files are, and where they are on the HDD.

And how can I get them to defrag?

Try JKdefrag instead, it's the best free defragmenter out there, your pagefile is probably one of those files so do a bootup defrag using JKdefrag.

which files? what are they called? if they are in use, they cannot be defragged.

if you are refering to the pagefile, hibernation file or event log, they can be defragged at boot time using PageFrag (from sysinternals/microsoft, I think).

I only use JkDefrag.

depends on your disk usage, but eventually it is necessary. if you just use your pc for browsing and reading mail, you probably don't need to defrag. if you regularly install and uninstall software, delete files or work with large files, then you should see a performance improvement if you defrag.

the hdd is probably the biggest bottleneck in current computers and if a file is fragmented, the read head needs to jump all over the place to read all pieces of the file. every time the head moves, time that could have been spent reading, is wasted. this is not the case with solid-state drives as they don't have plates or read heads.

if you have less than 10-20% free space on your drive, your file system will get more fragmented.

JkDefrag not only defrags your files, it also moves regularly accessed files to the faster end of your disk and the "junk" files to the slow side.

is it really required to use a 1GHz+ processor in your PC? No, but it is great not having to wait 20 seconds for your word processor to save :)

Someone told me its not a good idea to run two difference defraggers at the same time.(I may be wrong). I downloaded Diskeeper trial version to defrag my drives since other defraggers werent defragging it completely and DK seems to have done a good job the very first time. You could try it out.
