Cape Town - A Parliamentary written reply given by Transport Minister Sbu Ndebele to Don Gumede of the ANC shows that the transport network being prepared for the Soccer World Cup in Cape Town is a long way from being ready for the event.

According to the reply circulated on Tuesday, bus-based park and ride facilities which were supposed to have been competed in October this year are still only 43% complete.

A city-wide non-motorised transport plan involving a number of upgrades to the pedestrian and bicycle network in the CBD and the Somerset Road areas was supposed to have been finished in August. The project is currently 28% completed.

A project aimed at keeping pedestrians separated from the traffic on the Western Boulevard had a planned completion date of October. It is currently 71% completed.

Pedestrian improvements worth R55m at Green Point stadium have only been 59% completed although the planned completion date was November this year.

An integrated fare management system which was to be one of the key components of the public transport improvement programme for the province is currently standing at 15% completeness with a planned completion date of 30 October 2009.

A non-motorised transport bridge to Bhunga Avenue over the N2, as well as NMT links between Langa and the Klipfontein Corridor/Athlone Stadium were planned for completion on 15 October. The project is only 74% complete.

The city has embarked on intelligent transport management system (ITS) to improve network operations on a city-wide basis. The planned completion date was 31 January 2009, but the project is currently only 32% completed.

Other cities are also having problems, but many of the projects in Gauteng are pretty much on time and 100% complete.

I thought everything was going according to plan.

The article gives no information as to why everything is so far from completiion - 15 % completed, due date 2 months ago ?

Its one of those articles which is so general it could mean anything.

It makes no mention of the extra money spent to accelerate many projects, some of which were only meant for completion post 2010.

In addition CT generally sets realistic targets. Not targets that are meant to please people.

e.g. CT stadiums target was end Feb 2010, accelerated to December 2009, while other stadia all provided willy nilly May -October 2009 targets, but are still busy completing the venues.

If we're talking about delays, the real concern would be the Long Distance bus terminal which due to funding issues has only started works this month.

The IRT project of course remains critical but the stations structures are going up already and the red lanes are being prepared.

The city even paid extra to accelerate the Green Point station to February/March 2010.

Heritage issues delayed the paving of the Fan Walk in some areas but again not critical since this project is proceeding well and will serve the city for decades to come.

The airport is basically complete except for roadworks.

The N1 roadworks were accelerated to May 2010 to avoid further congestion.

Phase1 of Koeberg Interchange remains on schedule for pre June 2010 completion.

Things are progressing fast in CT, they're working around the clock to sort it out. I can't wait until it's over!

Cape Town opens first 2010 road infrastructure

The City of Cape Town will be opening one of its first 2010 legacy roads on Thursday.

Granger Bay Boulevard runs from the V & A Waterfront precinct to the newly-raised Green Point circle, opposite the Cape Town Stadium.

The city’s Eddie Chinnappen said it was all systems go, contrary to reports that this and other world cup infrastructure initiatives were behind schedule.

“Granger Bay Boulevard at the moment is opened to traffic. The circle, which is a raised circle across the Western Boulevard, that’s also opened to traffic. So if you look at the percentage completion on both these projects, we’re fast approaching 90 percent, and we’re very close to completion,” said Chinnappen.
