Dell backs Ubuntu Linux

image that. 20% cheaper and 100% more reliable. you would think this would be old news. And give WebGL 2-3 more years, and all the Gamers will also join the Ubuntu train.

i.e. I believe 50% of Windows Users only use Windows because their Games only work on Windows.

Weird, Dell started selling preloaded Ubuntu PCs years ago.

Another weird thing is just a few days ago I read on Ubuntu forums that they stopped selling them though? Maybe they took the old systems off their site in preparation for these new ones.

Is this available in SA, previously only US/Canada & UK I think?

Much easier to get Office working on ubuntu than most games. If it came preloaded, and all you needed was the activation key then it certainly boost ubutu's viability in the business sector.

Well thats good news for Linux users.
I think it would be hard for it to ever take off completely because there are not enough big companies backing it so Microsoft will always make sure the hardware companies install windows predominantly.

I run MS Office pretty well on Ubutu. Everything but Outlook and Access.. both which I can do without :) I really really do not like open office. Its so boring.

either that or they don't have a clue that an operating system/ms office/ie isn't actually part of the hardware.
seriously, ask most moms, pops and office workers how windows got on their computer in the first place...

Nope, it seems that "Dell [in SA] recommends Windows 7" and to make things worse, the only search result using Dell's SA site, for Ubuntu, is a "Dell 3330dn Laser Printer"...

I wish all the Ubuntu and Ubuntu bases distros installed in the world would become like "Skynet"....become aware and start hunting down and killing each and every Windows install out there, ridding us of this evil that was bestowed apon this poort earth to make us all scream at our poor PC's and Laptops, thinking it is our hardware that is up to crap...meantime it is the curse of Windoze that is making our daily and working lives a living miserary!

*pops my crazy pill* sjoe...that was a close call.

this is really kewl ... so glad dell is boosting its marketing on this even though it has been doing it for a while, its just nice to see some
force behind the drive, now if only we can get some kewl support for more games on linux!!

pretty sure someones gonna flame me for that 1 :}

I have been trying to by one of their laptops online, but it didn't give me the option to purchase it with ubuntu so I decided not to buy it.

Sucks that Dell stopped selling through their website though. Does anyone know why's that?

I mean on the South African portal, that is.

Yes, and OpenOffice is not making things any better. It is a real shame that Applixware faded (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Applixware_Words). In 1998 I did an informal comparison between StarOffice (OpenOffice's predecessor, for those who remember it), Applixware and some other package (Abiword pre-release?). As you would expect, StarOffice was a dog, running just as slowly as MS Office did under Windows back then.

But Applixware ran like a dream. Remember, this was back on a '486. Unlike MS Office and StarOffice, Applixware would load up instantly. It had about 20% the memory footprint of StarOffice, and the UI was just soooo much better and more responsive. Unfortunately, Applixware was commercial, so StarOffice became OpenOffice and now rules the open source office suite space. It really is Betamax vs.VHS all over again. Sigh. (Cue special effects, and insert dream sequence of alternate history in which OpenOffice died the painful death it deserves)
