Dell Power Brick

Please tell me that we are not this fücking retarded. The original 45w charger that shipped with the Dell that one of my colleagues uses is fried. Our IT department has spent the last year almost sending us one crap generic after the other. I asked why the hell are they not getting an original dell part and the reply I get is that Dell says if you want to by a charger, you need to buy the laptop that comes with it.

For fück's sake! I cannot believe that Dell does not sell replacement original power bricks. Does anyone on here know better than me or know where I can find one of these are who the hell I can speak to at Dell before I fire someone in IT?

The generic power bricks are fine. 19V @ 5A is the same from any PSU (or whatever voltage/wattage you are replacing)

If you haaaaaaaave to, you can order from dell directly in the US, but you'll need to mail forward from somewhere like the UK and courier it here otherwise it will disappear at customs. It will cost an arm and a leg, though

I think there is something wrong with the laptop or the wall plug causing the wall bricks to fail.

While the generic might be able to supply the laptop with adequate power, it probably won't implement the communication protocol that allows the laptop to identify the type of power supply. Not all manufacturers communicate with their power supplies, but Dell does. So it might work, but with reduced capabilities, or not at all. Best is to get an original.

Have a Dell... tried universal charger with exact same rating... Dell pre-BIOS POST warned of non genuine charger... ran in "reduced capabilities mode" ... Windows moaned about non Dell charger, performance was degraded. Tried numerous chargers... same thing. Eventually bought a 2nd hand Dell original and all good again.

Original Dell charger was insanely priced...

Original Dell charger was insanely priced...

For older Dell laptops it is a simple ID chip on the charger, you can move this chip to the new PSU and it will work 100%.

With newer laptops using proprietary chargers using voltage switching (i.e. 5V/19V), you must be very careful. For laptops deplying USB Fast Charge standard you can swap chargers, but you must be careful when chosing the brand, as it is destructive when charger is malfunctioning. I don't know how Dell fits in the last scenario.

Depends on how old the model is that the brick/adapter is for. Companies use any excuse to eol a specific model and keep switching standards in general leading to many models becoming obsolete by default unless you can manage to find generic replacements.
