My dropped off their old Dell XPS One - i5 / 4GB RAM etc

It seems to be stuck in a system repair boot.

When booting up, it gives the option 1) Start Repair (or something) or 2) Start Windows Normally. - but either just causes a loop.

What would the best way of formatting, and keeping this (I think) Windows 7 legit ?
Also, would I have issues with proprierty drivers on the keybord or anything weird ?

Thanks

open covers, has Hard drive dislodged itself?
remove hard drive, plug it in to another PC, can you see things saved on it?
next get a win 7 disk/USB try run a repair on it, see if it helps?

The HDD seems physically alright - as BIOS etc see it. I just think it corrupted itself.

They don't need any data from it though, so I can format - I'm just scared about the Windows key ?

Ha

You're right - it does have a sticker ... ok, much easier now :p

Going to Windows 10 - how does that affect this key though ?

Should be a sticker on it somewhere with the MS product key?

But the sticker would activate Windows 7 only ?
Or even Windows 10 ?

I've started download Windows 10 on this PC - so will set the other to boot from USB and pray it works ;)

They don't care about the data ; so at worst, I just keep trying

UEFI bios? It'll pick up and activate by itself usually, sticker or not, provided windows originally was activated on it.

It looks like this .

I guess I can sell it as a screen if all else fails, as it has HDMI in - I think it's 2,560 x 1,440

youre probably going to be fine,
got the sticker, so your probably going to be able to activate quite easily, or it might activate itself with no issues.

UEFI is the newer (actually been around a while) bios type whereby the activation key is embedded/tied to the BIOS. If your mouse works in your BIOS, then it's a good chance it's a UEFI bios.

The older bios is the traditional keyboard-only kind.

OEM PC manufacturers embed the windows activation key in the UEFI BIOS. I think your particular model supports this, so go online and activate windows. Should just work without any need for keys and such.

That is awesome - didn't know!

I'll try the mouse, but I Think it was a bit old ...

Thanks guys - all setup ... so now :

It's only 4GB RAM - should I go back to Windows 7 ?
I haven't cracked open the case - but do you think this is tough to upgrade? Maybe I Can find an old 4GB RAM stick?

Lastly - I think this was touch screen (!) and high resolution - not bad for 2013 or so. But now that I have Windows 10 ... it doesn't touch screen anymore ?

Touchscreen requires a driver to operate, being Dell Im sure they would only have released a driver for the OS it was released with. Its possible there is an update though for windows 10 so might be worth googling for it.
