It is highly fact sensitive as with any use of force law. If a homeowner in a crime ridden area saw two people breaking into his property and running towards him for example, he would easily be able to claim self defence. Especially as a 60 year old.
If instead, he saw them at the tree picking oranges, that self defence argument wouldn't be very strong.

Something like this:
Would likely be completely lawful to deter someone stealing your property

You just need to be able to be better than the average female cop in the US and not confuse your less than lethal firearm with the lethal one.

What can orange tree owners do in the UK if someones stealing from them?
 
This is a situation where less lethal, like an air rifle/paintball gun/CO2 pistol, etc, would have worked better. If that aggravates the okes and they try to kick your door in, you pull an Oscar.

Worked for me and a few others in my neighbourhood who had fence jumpers. I had dude try and steal my front loader out the car. He smashed the front passenger window and was hanging half out the car while he was trying to get the front loader out, so I emptied out a clip of BBs into his ass and legs from the window directly overlooking the driveway, and he was out there in a flash.

Depends on the situation. If your life was in danger and people were trying to get in, and you had nowhere to escape, then yes.

Or you could just wait for them to make entry...

The solution is somewhere in the middle. Growing up in a small town it was very common for all the kids to steal fruit

Reasonably the homeowner can set his dogs on you or chase you with a shambok.

Also was he stealing 2 oranges or a bakkie load. If he attempted to empty the tree, good riddance.
