I went to the dentist yesterday to have my wisdom teeth out and it cost like a bazillion rand. What happens to the poor people in this country who can't afford the dentist? Do they just have to suffer while their teeth rot out -- can you imagine?! -- or is there like free dentistry or at least some help for them?

they go to a normal hospital and there will be a dentist...
a friend of mine, who did dentistry, had to do a social year before she was a full dentist... she had to pull like a gazillion teeth everyday

Zuma Year... Almost everyone in the Medical industry does one of these years... Basically to PRACTISE ;)

But Hospitals/Clinics does have dentists AND ofcourse you have that train that goes around South Africa that has like a all-ine-one Medical thing going :D I personally just brush my teeth ;)

The poor go to the dental schools at the teaching hospitals- eg. Tygerberg, (stellenbosch school of dentistry) also.
I had my only non mercury amalgam, one piece gold filling pop out last week into a piece of toffee. I just washed it off
brushed the hole and superglued the thing back in.

Don't be too concerned, they are taken care of!

I would like the details of a good dentist........ I ‘ve been to many kwaks and need an recommendation. I work on the east rand

1. It is dental month and all registered Dentists provide free dental check ups and minor care.
2. Go to the university in your area. If they have a dental section phone there. They have weekly sessions where you will be a sit in patient to the students with a Prof keeping an eye on things. That you get for free also and they are brilliant. I had mine in PTA done there plenty when I was a student there ;) The female dentists are hot ;)
Dono if it's still free but if you need to pay it will be very very little

Well actually, according to my dentist... my superglue "quick-fix" of earlier this year saved my tooth from being decayed while I eventually got round to seeing the dentist.

+1 I am looking for a good dentist in the east rand that is open on a saturday that I can get an appointment this saturday struggling to get that right seems like every dentist is fully booked don't know where to look anymore

I remember Tuks having a student day where dentists to be would treat the public for next to nothing. This included students from campus. I'm pretty sure every Campus has one of these. I think it was Tuesdays and Thursdays. Just phone a Varsity near you :)

And be ready to wait. But if you need one you will wait. If you do not want to wait you have to pay.
