Can anyone please advise me what to do.....

I have a 500 gig & terabyte drive in my pc. The 500 is running the OS and i have some data on it. the tera has lots of data on it. When i open a folder on the tera, i get the "Data Execution Prevention" waring from microsoft and when i click on "close message", it closes the tera's route.

When i copy the data over to the 500, i dont have a problem opening the files. I ran antivirus, formated the tera drive, copied the data back to the tera and still the same problem....any advice?

I believe you can just turn it off.
I'm not really sure how I think its in the system properties

DEP is designed to prevent malicious code from executing from a location where code would not usually be executed from; so it is a specific counter for a generic method used by viruses to spread.

You can disable it, but that may only make things worse. Which AV did you run? My advice is to download another AV (AVAST for example), and Spybot. Make sure both are updated to the latest version and then scan your entire 1TB disk.

im using Mcafee and picked up nothing....can you send the link for spybot?

We had a nasty bugger which McAfee (and others) could not pick up - and it triggered DEP on the Windows PC's which had hardware DEP enabled.

Also, same bugger sent out a lot of packets on port 445 - looking for other PC's to infect.

In the end, backing up user data, a format and reinstall of Windows stopped me from going crazy.

edit : Search the McAfee forums with these keywords : bo:writable bo:stack buffer overflow in svchost

conrad, how do i check if its updating, mcafee that is

Depending on the version, there should be a red "M" or something on your task bar. Right click that and then select about, it should then show you there....
