Deploying free album release

Hi guys,

I am releasing a friends album for free via the internet. There are approx. already 1000 subscribers on the pre-signup newsletter. The WAV version is about 900mb and the MP3 about 150mb. I have an account at Hetzner but I am sure they won't be pleased with the sudden strain on their server.

What is the best way to share the files? There will be a torrent as well, but need a primary way that will be easy for end-users.

No seed now but got it on my now 100Mbps upload box too. Lets get this thing going :D.

kudos to jsheed_sa :)

Hmm not sure what's wrong, I successfully managed to add it to my justseed.it account and it grabbed it from my PC. Seeding too. Any ideas? Need to do the same for the WAV version shortly. Also tried to list it on thepiratebay, but it seems they have an issue including txt files etc under the Music category? :/

Nope, if there's a surge in traffic they'll ban the account I've seen it.

Yeah I think limit is 20gb/day. We're going with Google Drive, jsheed's server and torrents to start. Will eventually create as many mirrors as possible.

I'm struggling to understand how I made the torrent, added it to my seedbox, it successfully uploaded it and now NO ONE can download it?? :(

Hmmmm.

I'm not really a torrent guy, but I can seed it on another box of mine if you like?

BTW these are some stats for your downloads. I started the counter yesterday, just before you uploaded (pulled using vnstat).

Code:
                      rx / tx / total / estimated
 eth0:
       Dec '14 984.43 MiB / 1.22 GiB / 2.18 GiB / 7.95 GiB
     yesterday 2.94 MiB / 14.86 MiB / 17.79 MiB
         today 981.50 MiB / 1.20 GiB / 2.16 GiB / 4.47 GiB

Thanks! Almost busy uploading the WAV and then going to tackle the torrent again

Thanks. Succeeded in getting the mp3 in the box and now the wav is also downloading :-). Nearly there and you will have a dedicated seed for a good while :D. 34.6% on the wav torrent.

Great! We should be publicly sharing the links today, so traffic should start coming in

Some fun traffic stats - this is why a trial 15GB Amazon EC2 instance would never have worked ;)

Awesome. Is there a way to see amount of bandwidth for each of the zips so we could figure out amount of downloads? The links are bit.ly'd so we are recording it somewhat

Not particularly as I didn't really set anything like that up in advance.

I guess one way would be going through Apache logs and seeing which file they pulled and then you could get a breakdown of mobile / desktop downloads... but that's probably a bit of work to parse the file in that way.

I'll have a think and see what I can come up with.

Some updated traffic stats:

Interesting to see how much traffic this type of thing can actually generate. All this from only 2 zips up for download...

Code:
All good so far - my box can handle like 30TB a month, so this is nothing ;)

At full pelt this box should be cable of hitting 110 Mbit/s - so far we're only seeing a 1/5th of that.

On Soundcloud we also have about 130 mixes (1.2 million plays, 50k downloads). Those must be pulling ridiculous amounts of data! We were considering moving away from SC to make our own platform but I don't think that's going to be viable.
