Ahaha.. But you see. I'm clever... I know that the new deals come out after the 6th/7th... hence, Im doing the research now and going to get a phone next week... So then, it will change in roughly 1 month.
 
Nexus S anyone? Still like the only phone with 2.3. Even the Nexus One is stuck on 2.2. That's Android for you.
 
Would love the Nexus S, but Im not one to buy a phone for cash... so unless the networks have it in south africa, not getting one.
 
Nobody's mentioned the insane amount of onboard memory that the Galaxy sports.. I don't think there's anything but the Nexus S that comes close - That, and the fact that it scores far higher in benchmarks than the HTC, and if you get rid of the crappy samsung UI ( LauncherPro ftw ), it's got no competition anywhere.
 
Yes the Galaxy S has the best GPU around. But what advantage is that really, except for a few 3D games. As for memory, there are a number of Android devices with 512mb RAM. Even 384mb is plenty.

The Desire HD has 768MB onboard memory, or did you mean onboard storage?

Well, the reason that the Galaxy S came out with 8GB/16GB onboard storage is that Android 2.1 couldn't save to a SD card - Android 2.2 can.
 
The galaxy s is an excellent phone. The only downside is the tardiness of Samsung to update the OS. For me the screen makes a huge difference. The HTC is a good phone though. The upside of both is Android :D
 
Is the 2Gig Rom on the SGS used for the operating system and how exactly is it utilized? Why doesn't the DHD have ROM?

that will most likely only be here the end of this year if not the beginning of next yr, and if u don't wanna wait
another 10months for a phone the DHD is by far the only phone to choose ... mind you the GS2 specs so far look

Absolute bollocks, mate. If the phone is released in Feb, it will most likely be 2/3 months before we get it at latest. The Desire HD didn't take long to reach our shores, did it?
 
Hi - can anyone tell me if either the Galaxy or Desire, when bought unlocked from the US, will work in SA? My bro' is coming out next month and seems a good idea to buy an Android phone from Amazon that he can bring out for me. But totally not a good idea if there's some network conflict that will block me using the phone in SA with a Vodacom sim card. Anyone have exerience of using an imported Galaxy or Desire in SA?

If it's unlocked and a GSM version, no problem. Just don't get a freaking CDMA phone.

Thanks for the confirmation. Am keen to get the straight Desire (not HD) which is described on Amazon as "Unlocked Quad-Band GSM Phone", so assume the quad-band will cover the bands used in SA?

Would love to get the HD, but it's dollar price is one bridge too far at this stage, even though I'll be getting older technology. Sometimes one has to compromise.

Just be sure you know how much of a compromise it will be... The original Desire was pretty much the first of the current crop of 1GHz Android powerhouses and as such there are a few elements that show up its age. The two most serious: its onboard memory is measly, and its screen does not support true multi-touch. You should know beforehand that, unless you root out the box, you're probably in for a frustrating experience.

That being said, root the phone and its 1GHz processor allows it to stand pretty much next to the HD, just in a slightly smaller package. I'm quite confident of mine being the first phone I've had since my Nokia N95 that will satisfactorily see out its two year contract term.

Appreciate the warning and your advice about rooting the phone. Must confess had no clue about rooting, but after reading excellent Sticky on Android forum have a better understanding. Not sure tho' at my age I have the guts or expertise to try something like that on a brand new phone. Maybe I'll have to find a whizzkid (not too whizz) who can do it for me. Otherwise vasbyt and go for the HD.
