I can't find any confirmation or denial -

Does the size of the Desktop folder affect performance ?

I've always understood that having folders on the desktop containing movies, mp3's etc is not recommended.

And I'm talking files and folders, not shortcuts.

are you talking gerneral pc performance? or explorer performance?

if youre talking pc performance, then no. But clean it up anyway. its a crappy place to store stuff.

If youre talking Explorer, then yes, but only when yoy browse that folder.

Explorer performance.

I have clients who put 10 gig folders on their desktop and I'd like a reason to tell them to put them in My Docs ( cos I hate files and folders on the desktop especially when I back up My Documents only... )

I assume that hovering a mouse cursor over a folder on the desktop starts the usual counting of how big the folder is, how many files it contains, generating icons and preview images for the files, which should also get the anti-virus to do some scanning as well, slowing down performance...

Tell them you only backup My Documents. That's your policy. You had problems with Desktop backups before and don't do it anymore. ONLY My Documents.
