Hi,

I am wondering if there is a reliable way to detect if you are using a 8ta sim card with a gsm modem ?
In the past I have used the commands

at+cops=3,0
at+cops?

This would return the network operator name.
However with 8ta it seems to automatically roam with MTN and this procedure always returns MTN, and I cant seem to find a way to detect if it is an 8ta SIM or not.

Does anyone perhaps have any suggestions ?

Thanks,

Steeds.

I am wondering also if it may be possible to reliably detect a 8ta sim via the at+ccid command that gives the serial number printed on the sim

detecting 8ta network via AT commands

hi guys,

unfortunately at the moment, most sim cards on the 8ta network are set to forcibly roam and therefore the at+cops command will always return with mtn as the registered network.

one way to check is by checking the imsi via ussd using *2# and dial. a return should come back as
65502**********(last 10 digits of the sim card), indicating that you are using an 8ta sim card. i know that the go big deal(10gb) runs only on the 8ta network and not on mtn, data only contracts are 8ta and mtn and voice services(excluding blackberry), only mtn at this stage.

hope this helps.

and extended list of gsm at commands can be found here:

Thank you, this has been very helpful. I can use the AT+CIMI command to return the IMSI without needing to resort to USSD.
