Dettol recalls 750ml bottles

Article from 2009!

The producers of Dettol, Reckitt Benckiser, have recalled almost 25 000 bottles of the antiseptic liquid after these were found to be contaminated with the harmful and toxic chemicals acetone and butoxyethanol.

This week the company has embarked on an advertising campaign, urgently recalling 750ml bottles with batch numbers 55726, 55730, 55732 and 55734 with an expiry date of 02/2011 after these were found to hold health and safety hazards to consumers.

Spokesperson Eunice Mogotloane called on consumers who were experiencing irritation to skin, eyes or nose to seek medical attention.

However she allayed fears and panic, saying the products "shouldn't have any adverse health effects" as they contained minimal levels of contaminants. Mogotloane said the affected products were being recalled via direct notification to all health-care professionals, hospitals and the retail and wholesale trade.

She said the 24 840 bottles, which were put on the market in mid-March, were recalled after tests showed some of the raw materials used in the manufacturing of the product were found to be contaminated with acetone and butoxyethanol chemicals.

Though the recalling of the products started on Wednesday, only five consumers had been confirmed to be in possession of the product.

"Consumer safety is fundamental to sound and ethical business practice, and to our responsibility as the producer of quality consumer products. Reckitt Benckiser places the health and well-being of our consumers at the forefront of our product development," she said.

An Internet search showed that side effects of acetone included headaches, light-headedness and tiredness while inhalation could cause dizziness, drowsiness, nausea, vomiting or even death. Butoxyethanol was highly toxic and short-term exposure could cause irritation to eyes, skin and can cause kidney damage, while long-term exposure could lead to blood disorders.

Consumers in possession of the affected products can call the Reckitt Benckiser care line at 086 111 1100. - Daily News Correspondent

Two years too late...

How old are these batches then? At least 3 years and have probably already done their damage. But hey, they recalled it so things are cool now.

Hmm, yes that seems rather odd. You would think people would have used the stuff by now.

More info here...

A nationwide recall of the new Dettol Disinfectant Liquid imported from the UK has been ordered because it may pose a health risk, the National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications (NRCS) said on Tuesday.

"It fails to meet our requirements, and as such we urge the public not to use the product," NRCS general manager Thomas Mavhidze told reporters in Pretoria.

"In instances where the safety and health of consumers may be affected, we issue a consumer alert to say such a product is under recall and it's not advisable for you to use it.

"We issue a specific number [on any product] to indicate that it meets our requirements and is safe for use. This product has not met such requirements."

Mavhidze said the regulator could not ascertain the disinfectant's compliance with safety standards.

"We went on to conduct tests which indicated that this product fails," he said.

"Both on technical tests and administrative requirements, any product which is not registered by us cannot be sold. It should not be found anywhere."

He said bottles of the product might still be found in outlying areas, despite the recall, and he urged the public not to buy it.

Mavhidze said the regulator had also ordered that Domestos Extended Germ-Kill be pulled from the shelves, because it did not meet administrative approval processes.

"Domestos may not pose any health or safety risk to consumers as it stands, but if it does not have an approval from ourselves, it can't be sold," he said.

"We are addressing the matter internally. It's a matter of ensuring that they follow the processes, register the product, pay the levies and then sell the product," he said.

The recall did not affect Domestos Thick Bleach and other products in the Dettol range, including Dettol Hygiene Liquid and Dettol Antiseptic Liquid.

The NRCS is an agency of the department of trade and industry established to administer compulsory specifications and other technical regulations.

In instances where products do not meet minimum standards, it applies sanctions, including halting the sale of non-conforming products, the seizure and destruction of products, and the prosecution of offenders.

NRCS acting CEO Bongani Khanyile urged the public to notify the regulator about any shops still selling Dettol Disinfectant Liquid and Domestos Extended Germ-Kill.

I still want proof that it kills 99.9% of all known germs.

It's marketing jazz. As a disinfectant it kills germs, all of them in theory. In practice, they cannot say as such from a liability perspective. So they picked the next best thing...

are they valuable gems. or just common ones?

So it's been pulled off the shelves because NRCS doesn't know? Has the formula changed much in the last 60+ years?

TWO NEW DISINFECTANT PRODUCTS RECALLED

Two new disinfectant products were recalled on Tuesday because they did not comply with regulations, the National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications (NRCS) said.

The products were the new Dettol Disinfectant Liquid, imported from the United Kingdom, and Domestos Extended Germ-Kill, NRCS general manager Thomas Madzivhe said.

More than 4000 bottles of Dettol Disinfectant Liquid and more than 8000 containers of Domestos Extended Germ-Kill had been seized so far.

He said the recall did not affect other products in the Dettol and Domestos ranges, including Dettol Hygiene Liquid and Dettol Antiseptic Liquid, and Domestos Thick Bleach.

Madzivhe said the new Dettol Disinfectant Liquid was being recalled because it might pose a health hazard.

"It [Dettol Disinfectant Liquid] fails to meet our requirements, and as such we urge the public not to use the product," he said.

"In instances where the safety and health of consumers may be affected, we issue a consumer alert to say such a product is under recall and it's not advisable for you to use it," he said.

"We issue a specific number [on any product] to indicate that it meets our requirements and is safe for use. This product has not met such requirements."

Madzivhe said Domestos Extended Germ-Kill was being recalled because it did not meet administrative approval processes.

"Domestos may not pose any health or safety risk to consumers as it stands, but if it does not have an approval from ourselves, it can't be sold," he said.

"We are addressing the matter internally. It's a matter of ensuring that they follow the processes, register the product, pay the levies and then sell the product."

He said that as far as Dettol Disinfectant Liquid was concerned, the NRCS could not ascertain its compliance with user safety standards.

The product did not kill 99.9 percent of germs, as was claimed on its container.

"These are products which should ensure that a place is clean to a level where germs won't affect you. It must kill 99.9 [percent of] germs," he said.

"Anything that kills less, is not a disinfectant or a detergent. It has failed the bacteria efficacy test."

Germs built up resistance to products which were not completely effective.

"At the end of the day, they become a danger to yourself. You would rather just wash with water," Madzivhe said.

Dettol Disinfectant Liquid had been on the South African market since April, and he urged the public not to buy any bottles which might still be found in outlying areas despite the recall.

Bottles to be avoided used the descriptions Disinfectant Liquid Lime" and "Lemongrass".

The NRCS also advised consumers to ensure that the Dettol products they bought were made in South Africa and that the approval number ActGNR529/204408/040/0030 was on the bottom of containers.

The NRCS is an agency of the department of trade and industry which was established to administer compulsory specifications and other technical regulations.

In instances where products do not meet minimum standards, it applies sanctions, including halting the sale of non-conforming products, seizing and destroying products, and prosecuting offenders.

Our Products are Safe: Dettol SA

Hygiene products manufactured in South Africa are meticulously tested by statutory regulatory bodies, making them safe for use, Dettol SA said on Tuesday.

The products implicated as inferior and recalled by the National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications (NRCS) were illegally imported into South Africa by a third party trader with no connection to Dettol SA, spokesman Francesco Fattori said.

"Consumers can rest assured that all Dettol products made and distributed by Dettol SA are safe and effective, are compliant with regulatory requirements and standards," he said.

"The products live up to their claims that they kill up to 99.9 percent of all germs as tested by the SA Bureau of Standards. All registered Dettol SA products undergo rigorous testing and comply with local packaging and registration requirements."

Earlier in the day, the NRCS announced that it had recalled the new Dettol Disinfectant Liquid, imported from the United Kingdom, and Domestos Extended Germ-Kill.

NRCS general manager Thomas Madzivhe said Dettol Disinfectant Liquid was being recalled because it might pose a health hazard. He said the NRCS could not ascertain its compliance with user safety standards. The product did not kill 99.9 percent of germs, as was claimed on its container.

"It fails to meet our requirements, and as such we urge the public not to use the product. In instances where the safety and health of consumers may be affected, we issue a consumer alert to say such a product is under recall and it's not advisable for you to use it.

"We issue a specific number [on any product] to indicate that it meets our requirements and is safe for use. This product has not met such requirements."

Madzivhe also said Domestos Extended Germ-Kill was being recalled because it did not meet administrative approval processes.

"Domestos may not pose any health or safety risk to consumers as it stands, but if it does not have an approval from ourselves, it can't be sold," he said.

"We are addressing the matter internally. It's a matter of ensuring that they follow the processes, register the product, pay the levies and then sell the product."

Dettol Disinfectant Liquid had been on the South African market since April. Madzivhe urged the public not to buy any bottles which might still be found in outlying areas despite the recall.

Bottles with the descriptions "Disinfectant Liquid Lime" and "Lemongrass" should be avoided.

The NRCS also advised consumers to ensure the Dettol products they bought were made in South Africa and that the approval number ActGNR529/204408/040/0030 was on the bottom of containers.

In a statement, Dettol SA said it would work closely with the NRCS to root out the illegally imported and non-compliant Dettol Lime and Lemongrass Disinfectant Liquid.

Fattori said the illegally imported products were registered in the United Kingdom and complied with regulatory requirements and standards in that country.

To ascertain genuine locally made Dettol SA products, consumers were urged to check the manufacturer's details which should be clearly displayed on the container of the product. In South Africa, Dettol is manufactured by Reckitt Benckiser South Africa (Pty) Ltd.
