Junior Java EE dev here, just curious.

How well is the policy of flexible hours working out with some lucky developers And in what circumstances is it implemented?

Pretty much always had flexi hours. Last 20 years or so. Maybe I am just lucky.
I have found that once you have proven yourself, the bosses don't really care what hours you work - within reason generally.

Yup generally with less micro management more work gets done.

People who need that kind of management shouldn't be there.

Generally for us it's a case of get to the office before 10 and don't leave before 3, but that is very loose and nobody is timing it really.

Work from home is generally not an issue either, but try to make it known the day before, not just decide it on the morning.

Just started a new job about a month ago down under in Melbourne. We have flexi hours here too. Guys come in from 6:30 up until 11:30 with some leaving at 3 and others at 8. Just depends what you want.

Also, a few work from home a couple of days per week.

I guess it just depends on the company you end up at and the "politics" at the time.

If you are good at what you do and deliver what is expected then nobody can complain. I work from around 06:00 until approx 15:00, but if I am behind in my work then I stay until it is finished or work from home until it is done.

If you have nothing to do then you are wasting your time and the companies time so rather go do something productive, even if it is just chilling on the couch!

I'm working roughly the same hours.

Luckily the place I'm working at is happy with that.

Most companies I've worked at have a 9-3 policy. how u make up your 40 hrs is your business and not having stuff to do is not valid especially if u not in office.

You should be doing more than what your contract states.

Always had flexi hours.
Depends on if you are ambitious/motivated enough to deliver.

Depends on the company you work for as well. Mine has a "8 to 5" policy company wide. This includes an hour lunch. Some departments allow their employees to come in earlier and then leaving earlier, but you must do the 9 hours and it must be the same every day. Don't see how management cannot see that this is counter productive. For the Devs, we can come in at any time before 10, but then need to work the 8 hours for the day before I can leave - more flexible than all the other departments.

Do more than what you are paid for.

Why? He is paid for the 8 hours and experience. In this case, Junior. He can spend that few extra hours working on his own side project using different technologies.

If you are a junior, why work with other tech after hours? One of the biggest mistakes some people make in IT is not specialising. First become a guru at whatever you are doing, then branch out a little.

Whether you are a contract worker, permanent, junior or senior you should have a passion for what you are doing. Arrive that little earlier to work and out do everyone else. Learn more, know more and be the go to guy. You will go from junior to senior in no time with the right mindset. After you become indispensable to projects, you can then choose who you want to work for and with. Not to mention your earnings will increase exponentially.

We have about 100 customers of varying sizes

Most non-corporates do flexi time for their IT Staff.
* Software companies (and software services) are usually even more flexible
* It is not always an absolute right. It is usually a privilege that everyone gets
* 9-3, or 10-3 are the usual core hours but you have to be there for all meets including stand-ups. You cant use flexi time to duck meets
* Of course job function can change things
* Work from home (WFH) is becoming more usual but again a privilege not a right.

Overall companies do need to do this...

Having said that doing ones minimum hours only is not smart.
Management sometimes distrust flexitime and wfh. It is best to give them extra value in return for the concession
