Isn't it time malls are compelled to get proper security? My local mall has security guard at every entrance but what does that do against a team of 10 armed with rifles?

The SA mentality seems to be to make it as easy as possible for the criminal to get away unhindered to 'avoid collateral damage'. I think they are just being cheap. In Davao in the Philippines (one of the safest cities in Asia) it is common for every individual shop in a mall to have its own armed security guard.

It is up to consumers in SA to stop shopping at centres with insufficient security.

For those wanting an actual update, seems the owner decided not to be a victim and shot at the robbers.
Confirmed he hit one, who left a nice trail of bloody out in the parking lot. Hope the hospitals are on the lookout, or that he vreks (since dies is too polite to use on these parasites)

Pretoria mall robber nabbed while seeking medical attention at Baragwanath hospital

Johannesburg - One of the men involved in a mall robbery at a jewellery store in Pretoria on Thursday was arrested while seeking medical attention at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital in Johannesburg.

Chaos rocked Grove Mall on Thursday after robbers targeted Francois Jewellers and the owner shot at about five to seven suspects.

Several glass display cases in the jewellery shop were broken and shattered glass was strewn across the store, which spilled out of the entrance.

An undisclosed amount of jewellery was taken, said police.

Police spokesperson Daniel Mavimbela said the 29-year-old man was arrested later on Thursday evening following a tip-off received through the local police intelligence network.

He was treated for gunshot wounds to his lower and upper body.

He was charged with robbery with aggravating circumstances.

He is expected to appear in the Pretoria Magistrate's Court soon.
