What is a fair development rate one can expect or charge a customer for developing new or finish existing projects? This is fixed contract based. Experience = 3 to 4 years in C# & VB.NET, BEng Computer Engineering degree etc.

I don't get how a Car Garage can charge R400 per hour labour to work on your car (the guy is some random dude they got from a backyard) and someone with a degree writing computer programs can only earn R300-R500.

Seems a bit low, how about Java and C++ or is that the same?

Cause they're a company, you're private.

If you go to a development company for a project, they'll charge way more than that for the same work.

he is gonna spend 1 hour on your car.. you are probally gonna spend 172 on thier software ...

300-500ph is the rate i normally charge for development contracts.. for ahoc.. I do its according to client but sometime double or triple that..

I charge a higher rate for joining existing projects: the learning curve is higher because of the existing "code" (trust me, sometimes it doesn't deserve to be called code :p).

Ah yes that makes sense, still serious BS tho.

Do you mind me asking what type of software (and in what programming language etc.)?

Yeah I know, haven't worked on commercial projects yet but even projects we work on @ University you get messed up code (Some first year projects I looked at the one guy didn't know how to use methods and used a complex, not in a good way, if statement tree to incorporate all decision making  not pretty).
