I don't get how a Car Garage can charge R400 per hour labour to work on your car (the guy is some random dude they got from a backyard) and someone with a degree writing computer programs can only earn R300-R500.

Cause they're a company, you're private.
If you go to a development company for a project, they'll charge way more than that for the same work.

300-500ph is the rate i normally charge for development contracts.. for ahoc.. I do its according to client but sometime double or triple that..
I charge a higher rate for joining existing projects: the learning curve is higher because of the existing "code" (trust me, sometimes it doesn't deserve to be called code).
