Device Descriptor Request Failed USB Port Issue

Boot a live Ubuntu, if usb is recognised then at least you know it isn't hardware.
I had a similar issue with an old notebook and did exactly that.
The USB was not recocgnised there either so I gave up because it is really an old notebook.

Where do I get Ubuntu? Is it free?
Keep in mind I am no IT Technician so nothing too complex.

Get the latest 20.10 version.

Yes it's free.

Download Rufus, write the image to a usb stick and boot your computer from the usb stick via bios options.

If the ports work in linux the hardware is fine and you'll probably have to reinstall win10, if it doesn't work in linux then you know you have a hardware issue.

Once booted in linux we can help you with some more diagnostic commands like dmesg etc

No, it's just the way it's named from back in the day because amd came out first with 64bit desktop processors. It works on intel and amd.

Thanks, proceeding now...

@ponder ok so im in Ubuntu and connected a usb device in the faulty port. Its not registering...
guess that means the port is damaged...
Are there any other things we can do?

Not really. You can look at the output of dmesg & lsusb -v in a terminal command line if you want but if it's not working it's probably fooked.

Only other thing I can think of is resetting&updating bios.

Hmm I've already updated the BIOS today and it didnt fix it. Well this is a real bummer, I don't know why the port malfunctioned. I cant claim warranty as its well over the warranty period.

Its probably not going to work but I guess the last thing for me to do is a format of the OS. Really didnt want to do that :(

Reason I wanted to fix the USB port is I want to sell the laptop for as much as I can but when people find out theres something faulty they get uncomfortable, especially when it comes to electronics and rightfully so.

Thank you @ponder for the assistance, I'm very grateful.

It's probably a trace on one of the data lines, is it a USB 3 port? If so then you might be still able to use a USB 3 device in it but will work at lower speed. Can't find any info on this via Google but worth a shot.

Also have you cleaned out the port by blowing into it or visually inspected it?

I've heard of metals oxidizing, perhaps get a phone charger cable an repeatedly plug it in and out about 50 times with nothing plugged into of course.

You got nothing to loose.

@Rickster I checked the port and cleaned it out but there wasn't anything of note stuck in there, was clear.
Just bums me out cause it still detects USB devices just not fully connecting with them.

Thank you for the suggestion.
