Device Descriptor Request Failed USB Port Issue

Hello everyone, hope you are all well.

I've been having an ongoing issue that started over a year ago with my laptop. One day out of the blue one of the USB ports decided to not recognize anything I insert.
I've tried multiple devices with the same result. When I insert a USB device the notification sound plays that the device has connected and then it disconnects and says that
the device is not recognized. Recently however I connected an external hard drive and it remained connected for longer than usual, about 5 seconds. I was about to click into it when it disconnected.

I have check multiple websites for fixes and followed some of them with no success. Here is some of the stuff I tried:
  • Uninstalling all the devices in the Universal Serial Bus Controllers and then restarting.
  • Updating the drivers for all the USB devices and restarting.
  • Running a "chkdsk" command prompt thing that didn't seem to do much.
  • Attempting to follow the instructions of a SOLVED post on TomsHardware that required going into the registry and deleting stuff but I didn't continue as I was unsure.
Below I've listed the specs of my laptop just in case it's useful:
  • Acer Predator Helios 300
  • Windows 10 Home 64bit (Up to date)
  • Intel i5 8300H 2.30GHz
  • 8GB DDR 4 RAM 2666MHz
  • Nvidia Geforce GTX 1060 6GB DDR5
  • Samsung 960 EVO SSD 250GB
  • 1TB Hard Drive
  • Laptop is 2 years old.
The laptop is in excellent condition as I take care of my stuff. I hardly ever use the laptops keyboard and track pad as I have a USB keyboard and mouse. The laptop looks new.

NOTE: I have sent an email to Acer so waiting to hear back from them, if ever...

So any idea how to correct this issue with the USB port?

I had a similar issue years ago and it turned out to be my anti virus blocking it for some reason. I uninstalled it and everything worked. You can also try this in command prompt with admin mode:

sfc/scannow

That's soo strange. I'm using Bitdefender the free version. Will uninstall it and see what happens.
 
See if it picks up when you run Windows in safe mode first. That'll tell you if it's software related. If it works in safe mode, it's software related.

Ok so I uninstalled the antivirus and it had no effect. Trying the safe mode thing now.

Nope, still coming up with the same message...
Surely if it was damaged it wouldnt work at all? And if it is damaged I wonder how that even happened.
I don't man-handle my stuff.

Strange. Run the Event Viewer app on Windows and see what it says under System.

Don't know what this means. What do you see?

EDIT: Sorry I didnt check in System, it was in Administrative Events. Should I still check through system?
 
Nice. I'm wondering if it could possibly be the BIOS.
Okay so i've tried all the suggestions on the list you share except for troubleshooting through Cortana cause it says Cortana isn't available in my region (im in South Africa).

BIOS? How would we go about checking if its BIOS related?

If it's not software/driver related, then it can only be the actual USB port.

BIOS: you'll have to check for your specific brand and model number of your computer or laptop. Most computers will let you into the BIOS by pressing DELETE button constantly while it's being booted up. I would check if your computer or laptop needs a BIOS update as well. Go to the manufacturer website to check.

The only way to know for sure if it is software related is to do a clean reinstallation but I hate that.

I really don't want to revert the pc back to factory, formatting takes so long with all the programs I'd have to re-install etc, lets leave that as an absolute last resort.

Went to acer website and inputted my laptops SNID number and under the BIOS category this stuff came up. Not sure which one to choose?? Do you know?

I also hate reinstallations and would only advise it as a last resort.

BIOS: Choose the first one (it's the most recent). Also, check for other software updates for your laptop.

Okay so updated BIOS and the issue persists....
This sucks.
