Devin Townsend.

Hello all, welcome to the first installment of my 'Quarantine Project'

I want to be able to provide some relief during these coming times in the ways that I am able. People have been supportive of me in my time of need with the GoFundMe campaign, as we lost a lot of revenue due to the current and foreseeable touring cycle, and want to make sure I can provide something that in some way begins to say 'thank you'. In the ways Im able, I will provide as much content as I can during this period as its what I feel I can offer.

My company has a lot of people involved, and your support has saved us in so many ways. I know we are all affected by this and yes, I could look for another job during this period like so many others will have to, but I figure that the best thing I can do is focus on my work and hopefully provide some sort of relief doing what Im best at. I want to give back as much as I can over the next while, and I hope that some of the work I can manage here will provide a bit of comfort during these troubled times for those who enjoy what I do.

This first song, is just a melancholy sort of thing called ‘Quarantine’ to start the proceedings. The idea with this is that it may be many different styles, Twitch streams, concerts, perhaps a podcast... I have been kept afloat by the audience and wish to help in any way I can. (I am just learning how to do video and I will try to get more proficient at it as the time goes by).

I will do everything I can to help in the ways that Im able. On behalf of myself, Northern Music, HevyDevy Records, and the entire team that makes up my professional world, Thanks for supporting (saving) our business during this downturn. We realize the amount of people that are suffering and dont take this lightly. I figure the best way I can express this is to simply get to work. I will make sure I provide for the people who donated especially.

I am working on lots of ideas to provide during this hard period. I truly cant express my gratitude enough.

Thank you.

So this song is a favorite of mine.

And theres a bit of a story to it as well: I had been suggested the album ‘The Slow Light’ on Spotify by an artist I had never heard of called ‘All India Radio’, and it became one of my favorite albums I had heard in ages. I just absolutely fell in love with it, and in particular, a song called ‘Can You Hear The Sound’ which defined a whole piece of the year it came out for me.

When I left DTP, I went to Sweden to just clear my head and spend some time with friends, and during which, I learned the chords and structure to ‘Can You Hear The Sound’ and began jamming it with Morgan. It ended up being a lovely moment in time for me which I then mixed with Mattias at his house while he laid down some cool melodies.

I contacted Martin (All India Radio) on Twitter this week and asked if he would mind if I released this for the Quarantine Project and he agreed, so I made a quick video for it and I hope you like it. the term ‘Call Of The Void’ was one that I heard referring to that sensation when your driving beside a cliff and have a strange fear that at any moment you may just hurl yourself over.

Please listen to ‘The Slow Light’ by All India Radio and hear the original song I took this inspiration from. The structure is verbatim for the most part, and I thank Martin for writing such a lovely song and such a meaningful record to me. Thank you for being cool enough to let me share this tribute to his song. It was really an important piece of music in my life. Can You Hear The Sound:

Some days are harder than others, I had a rough one yesterday, but we’re still holding on. Be well my friends, I wish you love and peace.

Heres a heavier demo idea. I recorded the drums with Samus during the Empath sessions. Liam plays bass and Wes does a ripping solo. Its all about balance I guess, sometimes chill, sometimes frantic. This would be ‘frantic’ =)

I hope you have a good weekend. Please take care of yourself and your loved ones. Dont let the stress get you down, try to write some music or make some art maybe this weekend?

...or cookies? They're good too...

The backstory to this man's life and work is quite a ride, I gotta say, and lends an enormous dimension to the music created from those experiences.

This is #1, he's already on #4 - I will post them up in sequence over time.

So heres the first ‘episode’ of my podcast. Until I get a feel for it, I figured Id just start by doing a series on the albums Ive released…an overview and more in depth analysis of each seems like a relatively easy way of figuring out the format. Its maybe a bit long winded, but undoubtedly Ill learn to tighten it up. This one is about Ocean Machine, so if you want to hear me waffle on in the background about that album while youre going about your day…youre in luck! Terria will be next, but I’ll probably get through all of them eventually Id think.

Enjoy!

City

City is the second album by Canadian extreme metal band Strapping Young Lad. It was released on February 11, 1997. The album was re-released in 2007 with several bonus tracks and altered cover art. Frontman Devin Townsend assembled a permanent lineup of Strapping Young Lad to record City, including prolific drummer Gene Hoglan, and Townsend's former bandmates Jed Simon on guitar and Byron Stroud on bass. The album was critically acclaimed with Revolver naming it one of "the greatest metal albums of all time",[2] and it is widely considered Strapping Young Lad's best work.

Hey man, I'm going to **** this **** up
No fear, no compromise, I want it all
I will never be afraid, and I'll die with what I believe
All of you assholes can stay rotting here
I do not care, I will not be there
I have got to save myself
And don't tell me there's no one else
And all you are is all you are
I'm so sorry (for you), I'm sorry
So all hail the new flesh
Because it suits me fine
Just get away, you mother****
And we'll be back if you come
For what this means to me, you piece of ****
I'll see you pigs in hell
I just know everything's going to be ok

Heres the stream from the first concert yesterday... (for some reason, the quality is blurry, Ill try to solve that) The concert has appeared online (as expected) so I figure I may as well just post a decent quality one here, but ALL proceeds are for frontline workers, so I hope you understand. I think we're looking at a substantial amount of revenue raised for the hospital foundation on this one, so cheers to you all. The next one is this coming Saturday and all benefits from that one will go to the NHS in the UK, and it will be a different setlist. There are prizes for both top donations as well as random draws from some amazing gear companies (Fractal, Toontrack, Neural, Line6, KSR, Dunlop, Mooer, D'addario, Fishman etc) and each 'ticket' gets a link to a download to the audio. Tickets available here:

So this is episode 3, about the album 'Infinity' (which followed City and Ocean Machine). I warn you going into this: I am confusing in the ways i explain this one. Theres so many things I would like to say and honestly, Im barely able to be coherant about it all here. Once it gets going it makes a bit more sense, but it takes a while to warm up... and really, fair play. This was a hard thing to record and discuss, and in reviewing it, I still didnt find myself able to even scratch the surface. Regardless, Infinity was exactly where I was at the time, so I have no 'regrets', but you know...yikes. Anyways, I hope you enjoy this as in any case, I tried to at least be honest...(maybe a bit hard on myself, but honest nonetheless).

Take care- Dev

Infinity is the third solo album by Canadian musician Devin Townsend, and the first released under his real name. The album was released in October 1998 on Townsend's label, HevyDevy Records.

David who?

I'll give him a try, but way too noisy for my taste, gimme someone like James Blake who understands how to use the silence between notes..

Ok, so: A few years ago, myself and the DTP band had the privilege of playing a show with friends Opeth and Gojira at their show at the Red Rocks Amphitheater in Colorado. Both of those bands professionally filmed and recorded their shows and have released DVDs of it. I did not record this show, but have been asked by people if I could find a song from it. Fortunately, a few people on Youtube posted footage (thanks to MRYNCRISPY, TwilightCalzone who we could reach for approval, and also I used a bit from videos by Melanion and Trapper, whom we wrote but couldn't reach, but hopefully its cool..) as well as our good buddy Neil Lim Sang for his great still photos here as well. This is truly a very lo-fi live video, but it at least gets the point across =) It was a fun show and it was nice to be invited to play. Thanks to Callum for talking to the Youtube folks and Mike StJean for helping me figure out some Premiere Pro tricks. Hope youre all doing well, and theres lots more content coming your way soon. Keep fighting the good fight, and try not to let the bad days grind you down. -Dev

So, its been a strange week, and I have been writing a lot of strange music. Amidst the more tumultuous stuff thats appeared, I often find it therapeutic for me to just simply play guitar in the mornings, and over the years I've kind of 'developed' (for lack of a better descriptor) a sort of chilled out, Ambient guitar technique. This isn't meant to be focussed on, its meant to be a sort of wash that you can play while working, chilling, or creating something (thats my hope at least). I like playing like this, and in fact, Id say 80% of what I play with a guitar in my hand over the last decade or so ends up sounding something like this.

I had recorded some of it in the background of the Podcasts (which I will be continuing) and was asked to post it, but it made more sense to me to do a fresh one here. Lots of people still think Im secretly the same raging metalhead I was in my mid 20's, but its been a few decades since I legitimately felt that way I'd say. This improvisation is one take (with a bathroom break I edited out) and I used a Sadowsky Telecaster and a Fractal AX-8 for the sound. Art for this (and the Podcast) are done by my good friend Travis Smith at Seempieces.net.

Hopefully its helpful to some of you who need a sonic break.

Thanks again for the ability to do this. Ill release this in a physical form if theres any interest.

I really like echo.

Peace.
