Hey guys.

I got the following setup here at home.

Billion 5300 4 Port ADSL Router: (Currently DCHP Server)
- Connected to Telkom ADSL
- Connected to 1x Mecer Notebook via Ethernet
- Connected to 1x HP Laptop via Ethernet
- Connected to 1x 8 Port Switch

8 Port Switch:
- Connected to 1x Desktop PC via Ethernet
- Connected to 1x NetGear Wireless Access Point

NetGear Wireless Access Point:
- Configured for 3x Mobile Phone Devices
- Configured for 1 Dell Laptop and if the other Ethernet laptop also wants to connect it can wirelessly.

Now Question:

I want to assign IP addresses to each device statically based on its mac address. What is the easiest and best way to go about this? Currently they all get ip addresses simply based on who connects first.

Not sure about your Billion router, but most routers allow you to assign static IP addresses based on MAC Address.

IMO, the best place to do it is on your Billion router. Some people are of the opinion that you should assign them statically on each machine/device, but this just turns out to be a pain in the ass, especially for port forwarding and other firewall rules. Best to configure everything in one place - on your router.

Again, not sure how the Billion router works, but to assign static IP addresses based on MAC Address, you go to the LAN/Network setup page, or the Router Status page. There it will show you a list of the connected devices, and you can choose which ones you want to assign a static address.

If your Billion router doesn't support his functionality, then check if your Netgear WAP has a built in DHCP server, and if it supports the functionality.

BTW - that's one a lot of devices for a home network :)

My Smoothwall box assigns dynamic IP's (via DHCP) and then "remembers" which MAC had which IP.

But you can also assign static IP's if you need to.

alternatively if you can change the length of the lease, set it to a long time
