It used to be that everything Blizzard made was a hit. Diablo, WarCraft II, StarCraft, Diablo II, WarCraft 3, Wow - a number of hits in a row. Every game was an instant hit.

What have they done since then that is new? I can think of only one game - Overwatch.

The rot gained momentum when Blizzard merged with Activision and Vivendi in 2008 or so.
 
I already pre-purchased it, but I'm bit miffed that the new purchase prices do not take into account your prior ownership of the game.
I still have my original Diablo2 and LOD discs and covers.

I put in a few hours into it as well, couldn't really get into it either. I actually preferred the paper version over the digital version.

And it needs competition. I love the game, but it needs a prod from other options, and things are looking pretty good in this respect: Diablo 4, Last Epoch, D2 Res. Best contender at the moment is, I think, Last Epoch. In beta but already well worth playing. Diablo 4 is, I am sure, going to be great fun but I have concerns about its longevity and depth. I like the fact that the team is looking for community input, but I can't help agree with the the idea that the initial presentation / ideas and the ongoing changes points to a team that doesn't really have a coherent idea of what they are doing. Either way, I'm hoping for the best.

I even picked up D3 again recently, as I figured out (after like 2 years), how to unlock my account, and it's kind of fun as I missed all updates from quite a while prior to Rise of the Necromancer. Sometimes it's nice to just hit things and look for green arrows.

So, let's hope PoE 2 kicks ass and takes names in light of all this, but it's a while away.

I thought about buying Diablo 3, because I've never played it, but it is still too expensive. It would cost £25 for the base game and first expansion, for a game that is pretty old by now.

Also, a lot of the things about Diablo 3 make me worry that any money spent would be money wasted. Like the lack of a skill tree.

And, frankly, I am super hyped. The team really seem to have a good feeling for what the community wants and doesn't want, and have a focussed vision for the game.

I actually think that should make some balance changes. But perhaps they will do so in a later patch. All they have said for now is that they aren't looking at making any changes right now.

The reason I say so is that I took a look at a popular mod called Project Diablo 2, which rebalances a lot of stuff. One of the things that they tried to do is make more builds viable for endgame, by changing the balance. I like this approach.

Without RoS it is pretty bland and I wouldn't in 2021 pay full price as it would be a lot better at least 50% discount or more. Furthermore it 'gets better' if you do at least a few treasure goblin, bosses and challenge rift runs with people...

The base game plus RoS costs £25. Still too much for me. If it was like £10 to £15 for the base game plus expansion I might have bought it.

I suspect they will, but I am glad they are starting at baseline. If you've not tried Median, I highly recommend it.

It's not very good, in my opinion, but some brainless fun when a mathematics contest like PoE gets fatiguing. I'd highly recommend Last Epoch if you are looking to scratch an ARPG itch (it's in beta, but updated regularly), and well worth it for the state it is in now, IMHO.
