the catchall concept is an interesting one...

I also used to run catchalls. In fact this account is still under myadsl@....
Was very handy for catching out who was spamming you but then it started to become more of a pain than it was worth as some spammers just mail common names at domains so bob@ john@ etc. This was before gmail and it's magical spam filter though.

GMail has a similar feature - you can insert any thing after your username and before the @ sign if you insert a plus (+).
Lets say my username is [email protected]. I can insert anything between my username and the @ as long as I separate it with a +, for example:
[email protected]
[email protected]
[email protected]
The mails still reach your normal GMail account, but you can see that it was sent to [email protected]. You can then sign up with this email address and see if Edgars for example sold your address. Granted, as you have to fill out a piece of paper, it will probably be of less help than doing an online form. Also, some sites regard the + as an illegal character.
I caught PNet like this - they gave out my address to some other site.

Not sure. But does the tick box say "We will sell this to anyone on the internet"? It was possibly some sort of "We will allow 3rd party operators to contact you". But my point is that this just seems rude, they make enough money from us when we buy stuff from them, do they really have sell our email addresses as well?
