Cape Town - The Springboks’ sleeping patterns may have been disturbed on their way to Europe, the team’s former conditioning coach Derick Coetzee fears.

Due to financial constraints, the Springboks travelled to Europe in economy instead of business class and Coetzee feels this may have had a negative impact.

“It’s important that the players’ biological clocks are properly set while on tour. The fact that the Boks flew in economy class and not business class could cause their sleep rhythms to be disrupted, even if the time difference in Europe is not much. I would never let big players or guys with lower back problems fly economy class.” Coetzee said in an interview with Netwerk24.

The Boks started their year-end tour on a low note when they were thumped 38-3 by Ireland in Dublin last Saturday.

It was Ireland’s biggest ever win over South Africa, comfortably eclipsing the 32-15 win in Dublin in 2006.

Coetzee was the Springboks’ fitness guru between 2004 and 2007, when Jake White was the head coach.

His tenure ended when the Boks won the 2007 World Cup final by beating England 15-6 in Paris.

This Saturday the Boks tackle France in Paris, before also playing Tests against Italy (Padova, November 25) and Wales (Cardiff, December 2).

Surely they earn enough to pay their own way or upgrade their seats if they wanted to?

So the current crop of players aren't just losers, they're cheapskates too!

Economy coach sitting in economy coach wishing he could be first class coach.
 
They played *** before they were on the plane...
 
In olden days the springboks would have sailed to Ireland on a boat, play them the following day, and still beat them with 10 men and both teams wearing green.
 
I actually know Derick Coetzee and what he says is the truth ... with rugby players in general.

But in the context of the Springboks and their performance against Ireland, the boks lost because of much more than just poor conditioning. Terrible tactical mistakes and terrible handling and a terrible game plan were the cause of the Springboks' loss.

Wait, what? What are rugby players with lower back problems doing in an international game?

Anyways.

A bit too late - everybody knows by now that economy class = sardine class. Why try to shove in a couple of big guys into a small, cramped space with very little leg space for a couple of hours? :erm:
 
I would've considered believing him if this poor showing was a once-off. But it isn't. It is part of a pattern of record-setting losses under an incompetent coach.
 
WTF, how does an international union rugby player fit in economy class??? I'm 6'3" and hardly fit, and I'm a lot lighter than a 110kg bulky bok.
It's a damn 11 hours seated like a sardine.

Hell I'd understand if they threw the game just because of this. WTF.
