Did I just get a free key?

Quite a few weeks ago I was in BT games and asked if they did pre-orders. I then sighed some form with my name and email address and stuff. I didn't pay or anything I just filled in the form. This morning I received this sms
"See the following for your Day 1 GUILDWARS 2 CODE.Visit https://register.guildwars2.com/ to download the game. 65536H-RSTM4-HJGK-6KJ-PTCN7DE Regards BT Games" (obviously not real key - u can try it if you like, hope it works :) )

What is that? Did I just get a free key? I would be so happy because I had to drive all the way to pta this weekend to beg my aunt and grandma for the game for my birthday that was 2 months ago.
 
i registered my key also that i smsed , did not pay anything to btgames.

though i bought 2 copies from takealot, nothing from them yet
 
Got my key this morning as well. To my understanding its a key that they can give away that you can use to register for the game to pre-download the client so you can be ready on release day. Started the download, estimated it at about 25 Gb download for the client. I assume we will get a official key with the game that will give as access to the game. That's my understanding.
 
Gentlemen I think we got ourselves free games.

It says "See the following for your Day 1 Guildwars 2 code" not download code or 1 day code.

It's what I think. Can anybody confirm maybe? **** I hope.
 
Does anyone know how I can check which key I have? The account management is so simplistic and says nothing.

Also did any of you receive an email as well with the code you received with sms?
 
When you purchase GW2, before the launch, you should have received a key from whichever company you bought it from. This would get you into the beta events and stress tests prior to launch. When the game launches or just before it lanches you are sent another game key. This game key is now the main one that activates your game to be used after launch. If you do not apply the key within 5 days after launch, your game is supposed to stop functioning. So, this key could be just the initial key as obsidian said.

If you pre ordered (not prepurchased), you likely have a key for launch, but if you don't pay for the game, or your card is not debited for the game, then you likely will not receive the main activation key just before or after launch.

Finally, you could be luckily the subject of a stuff up :)

The client size currently depends on if you download it now, or if you have the same client since the beta weekends. It is sitting on about 17 GB if you have the patched client from the last few months. If you download a clean client now, it is about 1 or 2GB less.
 
I can't find anything that states that a pre-order key will expire if you don't pay. Can you maybe point me to it.

Also I thought pre-ordered keys couldn't access the beta's and only pre-purchased could. I really hope that I got the game for free. For I am broke as hell.
 
OK I found it. But it's all for pre-purchase. I going to have to buy the game and only then see if this key I got works or not.
