I'm catching up on the news now, after seeing the headlines on Sunday.


Look at his farm


Looking at those pics in particularly the pic of the bedroom, made me think that he was living like a pauper. I mean look at that empty old school room with old school red chair. I thought as the leader of such a big movement and the owner of such a big farm maybe he would be living in more luxury. Maybe he was having a cashflow problem and hence couldn't pay his workers in time.

For all that he did I don't think he deserved what happened to him. Unfortunately I feel that radical maniacs on both sides are waiting to start a big fight.

The singing of that song must be stopped, because the less educated people will take it to heart as we can see now.

The AWB bankrupted the poor chap. Remember how they paid for his bail (I think 6K in all coins?), that was probably a stunt but it looks like the guy was broke. He has/had a wife, surely he didn't live with her in the room he got killed in? It looks like his family didn't live on the farm...

Eugene's house, a very average Ventersdorp house at that, is located in the town itself, 2 streets from the church. I've been there before. He's related to me.

And no, he wasn't exactly living a Julius Malema lifestyle.

It was stated in several reports that he lived in town and was only on the farm for the day to look after the animals on the farm.

To be frank, it's far too dangerous for farmers to live on their farms as farm attacks as this one just shows is totally brutal, barbaric and just plain inhumane. Due to this farmers don't furnish their houses on the farm with more than bare necessities as it's frequently being "reposessed"

People living in the safety of cities don't have even the slightest idea of how bad it is to still be a farmer in todays SA. Think farm attacks is issolated? Think again!

I know a lot of small farmers - and when I saw the house and farm, it never even occurred to me to ask if he lived in poverty. All the farms I know look like that, and the people all live like that, or "worse".
Some farms have clay-dung floors, and whitewashed walls. One farmer I know uses a bucket as a shower, not because they are "poor", but because they choose that way.

Who cares? He was in jail did we want him to be a millionaire.?... to do that he had to convert to the ruling party. So he was poor most people in this country is. No matter who they voted for or what they believed in.

My grandparents' farm is a few km's away from his. There are no luxuries. No running water or electricity or telephone. The borehole with a windpump secures the water, an old fire-stove secures the food and allows for boiling of warm bath water. An afrox bottle secures the fridge temperature. They live on their R500/month grants.

People on here are very quick to comment on what they know nothing about...

Farming is not a luxury life some of you might expect...

Also, remember that her did not actually live on the farm, but rather a house in Ventersdorp. At most he would have used the house on the Farm for resting in midday breaks etc.

They've lived in the farmhouse for the last 50 years or so. They do not own any of the maize fields. They have their own livestock, but it's mostly for self-sustaining purposes. Nothing quite like having mieliepap with milk still warm from the cow's udder, true story.

So, was not sure if I understood you correctly. From what I can gather its one of these but I am not sure which one it is. They have a farmhouse but no farm (more like a small holding). They have a farm but rent out the land for someone else's crop. They have a farm with land but dont grow anything on it.

I think its option 1, they own a small holding... in which case I can understand their situation. If its the second option then they should be getting rent money and if its the 3rd one they should sell the farm so the land gets used like it should be and they can live in comfort for the rest of their lives (unless they dont own the property in which case things will be tough).

Is this not "vrug reg" when you sell your farm's "vrug reg" like mineral rights but you are alowed to stay in the house until you die and then the house goes to the person who owns the land?
