ok yes, theres a difference between drug addict and recreational drug user.
Drug addicts carry the connotation of dirty people who will steal, rob and damage what ever they can to get high.
Most of us arent like that, and even some drug addicts would never steal or hurt a fly. Its morals and upbringing that make a person do what they do. And you find the people who commit crime to help their addictions never had a good upbringing, good family life or good morals..Drugs dont make you do anything, you make yourself do things for drugs...

Sorry but I call bull****. I come from a decent middle class family without many problems. My sisters turned out just fine - I'm the only one in the family to be this messed up. My parents and sisters were strong role models and they all tried to teach me the right way to lead my life. I was the one who fault their morals and norms. When I'm clean I am a completely different person but when I'm high there is almost nothing I wont do (I would never kill etc) to keep using. I'm driven by a need so strong that no amount of love or moral fibre is gonna stop me....

Why are we here?
Before coming to the Fellowship of NA, we could not manage our own lives. We could not
live and enjoy life as other people do. We had to have something different and we thought we had found it in drugs. We placed their use ahead of the welfare of our families, our wives, husbands, and our children. We had to have drugs at all costs. We did many people great harm, but most of all we harmed ourselves. Through our inability to accept personal responsibilities we were actually creating our own problems. We seemed to be incapable of facing life on its own terms.

You do know NA is a load of bull**** - right?

Yeah I know. I threw myself into it for a good many months after rehab but at the end of the day it was me who decided to use again and then clean up again. All the meetings, the social dramas and the phonecalls to my sponsor didnt help one bit. Plus, them addicts are crazy yo </end fake gangster accent> :p It may work for some but it's not for me. Not anymore...

Ok obviously there will be differences from the norm, what i said is not bull****, just doesnt fit your profile. Being addicted can obviously make people do crazy things, but if you know you need to steal for example to get hold of some drugs, then it should be your responsibility to stop urself and get help before you go down that slippery road. If you decide not to get help then so be it, its your choice not the drugs...

The people who run NA have problems not many other people have, to compare them to the public is crazy, NA is the end of the line for hard drug users.

I completely agree with you there. It IS the responsibility of the addict to make that choice but many many many addicts need to be dealt much stronger consequences before they'll admit they're addicts.

They arent comparing themselves to the public are they? When they say they 'can not live as other people do' surely that already implies a distinction?

NA is the end of the road for many people from many walks of life but after 10 years in the programme I can safely say that the only thing keeping me clean is my commitment to sobriety (which does slip at times and I find myself in the precarious situation of active addiction again).

Well that's the thing with NA : it is addicts that have decided 'enough is enough' and join the program. That's a large part of the battle won anyway - which, of course, NA will take credit for should the person not do drugs again.

However the rate for failure is 95% - and as has been pointed out, some people have gone to rehabs/12 steps many, many times and still relapse.

Is it an effective program? I don't think so

not comparing completely, i just got annoyed when they came to lecture us on their problems when only a relatively small portion of all drug users will end up going down that road. I do respect them for cleaning up their acts and trying to educate though, but sometimes their education is based on extremes rather than norms...

Good for you though staying clean, must clearly be hard, but theres always a light at the end of the tunnel. Love and family can help. Do you have a significant other? They can play a huge part, did for me...

Ive got a friend who was bad, started with something small and ended up throwing his life away for the stuff. He forced himself out of his current position and went to a Rehab centre in mozambique, he hasnt left and has started working for them. Think hes loving life atm.

I'm very fortunate in that I have a supportive family and a lot to live for (a beautiful daughter tops the list). I also have my ex (who left because of the drugs) who stays in contact with me and continues to care and support me in my efforts to stay clean. I'm incredibly grateful for their precense in my life - I'm luckier than most in that regard...
