Dierct X 10 Card Selection

How do you know he will need a new psu?? He hasn't stated which psu he has.

ATI is the faster card if you want the card to last for a bit longer go with the ATI if you aren't bother and will be upgrading again within a year anyway get the 8800.

The problem is that the second power connector is an 8-pin PCI Express auxiliary power connector specified by the new PCI Express 2.0 standard, and almost all power supplies don’t have this power connector yet.. and it consumes alot of power 215watts to be exact and it only gives out full power when the 14 pin power connector is connected.. so you will have to buy the card and to make sure its running at full pace buy a new PSU not worth it (i did my homework before i got my 8800 and the ati wasnt worth it)

i have an old 450watt... i dont have the 8 pin plug, and my card works fine. if you want to overclock though then you need the 8 pin plug (apparently)

where did you do your homework?

ok folks, here's the deal, i'm running e6600 cpu, on a gigabyte ds2 board, 1gig ddr2 800mhz at dual channels, on a 500w PSU, my card is really ****, the onboard works 1000000 times better, just using the card to free up the ram! so now i want a card, personally i'm an ati fan, had a x800gto for a year, beautiful card!

my old pc blew up, taking my card with it, swak! :(

i know the ati card has driver issues, but surely they'll sort it out or should i just wait for the new breed? i really dont know, say i buy a R5000 card now just to be out done in 2 months by a R3000 card!

Well the latest Catalyst drivers didn't do much for the performance, if thats an indication for you?

But technically the 2900XT should be great, its the highest spec'd card around, no reason why it shouldn't be performing, except drivers...

If you just wanted to be safe, get a 8800GTS, or seeing as you would spend R5000 get a GTX.

omg dude, i love your sig, i just cant stop laughing! i think i'm gonna wait a while for the dx10 market to settle, see what comes out in the next month or 2, who know's maybe ati fixes their driver issues! for lack of better words i'm an "ati kop", always have been, always will be! nvidia cards always make game look "cartoonish" opposed to ati's "realistic" look...

so boys, i think i'll give it some time! just i'm itching to pull out a new card as my current x1550 is the biggest piece of **** i've ever seen lol, my on-board beats this card hands down!

anyhow, thanx for the input! it was an eye opener!

I prefer ATI also. I've pre-ordered the 1gb version of the HD2900XT, hopefully I'll get mine soon

You don't need the 8-pin power connector to run the HD2900 it works just fine with 2x6-pin. And it'll overclock just fine as well
The HD2900 isn't a 215Watt part it depends on which model you got. They vary from 160Watts to 220Watts there isn't a sure way of knowing really.

As far as Image Quality goes the GF8 is just a hair bit superior. It has near symmetrical filtering, which is not the case with the ATI card. Their both very good though and better than Last gen parts.

Where performance goes the drivers still have a long way to go (so do the gf8 drivers even) so we'll keep seeing improvements for months to come.

If i had the opportunity to upgrade now I'd go for the 8800GTS 320mb, It is the cheapest & still a very powerful card. You wouldn't notice a significant difference in todays games with a HD2900XT.

By the time dx10 becomes mainstream we will be on the next gen dx10 cards already :/

welllllll, you might notice a difference at those stupendous resolutions of 2550x234234234234 or something like that... but for me and you i think 1280x1024 or even 1600x1200 the 8800gts 320MB should play everything you throw at it... for the next 12 months or so :D
