Diesel vs Diesel

So, i sold my Forester and got myself a brand new Renault Duster 1.5 dCi on Saturday. Very different fuel usage, i must admit. Forester was heavy on juice. But that aside...

I know the Renault takes 50ppm diesel, so i would just like to know whether it is best to fill up at the same garage / brand everytime, or is 50ppm the same quality everywhere, across brands ??

TIA

I've never noticed a difference, but some people seem to be able to tell when their car is performing 1% better, just by the seat of their pants. No doubt some of them will be along soon to tell you which fuel to use :)

I have a 2012 Diesel HiLux DC bakkie. I use 50 ppm only (as is recommended by Toyota)
I fill up at any fuel outlet, using any brand. Have not noticed any difference between fuel brands at all.

Sasol does 10ppm and this is said to be much better for Diesel engines.

My Diesel Car doesn't do so well with shell diesel, the rest of the brands seem fine

The only reason I fill up at the same pump every time, is because our local Shell garage sells the cheapest 50 ppm in this area.

It will make no difference what brand you use, however, if you can get 10 ppm, it is much cleaner, and therefore better for your car in the long run.

Enjoy the Duster! :D

BP gave me terrible consumption and performance, but Engen, Shell and Caltex are all pretty solid and return similar results.

And all the fuels are within 1% EXACTLY the same chemically, so the fact that you used BP had no bearing on your terrible consumption or performance.

Used it for 3 months straight because of Discovery rewards - it was only after I canceled with them that I started using the other stations that I noticed a substantial difference in performance (more responsive) and economy (50-100km improvement in range).

I had the same issue with BP and their petrol, across 3 different cars - an easy 50-100km improvement in range and much better throttle response.

Maybe it's not that noticeable on the little 1.4 engines, but it's definitely noticeable on more performance oriented cars.

Maybe you noticed a difference, but i can pretty much guarantee you that it would not be a statistically noticeable difference due to the fuel alone, fuel in this country is pretty much all exactly the same regardless of the brand, unless you are buying performance racing fuels etc etc etc.

Consumption of my tdi at idle, aircon off:
shell 50ppm 0.6 l/h
sasol 50ppm 0.9l/h

identical conditions.

Intriguing to say the least... because whilst there may be a difference due to additives, it should not be anywhere near that number...

Indeed.
That trend also bore out with normal driving. The shell gave me, repeatedly, considerably better consumption than the Sasol. This was while I was working in Centurion and living and Randburg, and the daily commute was pretty consistent.

I'm far from an expert so I don't doubt your claims, but just throwing out my personal experience across a few cars. The only real difference would be the additives used, and I recall a table showing that BP use 1 or 2 more than the other guys - whether that makes a difference, I don't know.
