DietPI OS (not just for the Raspberry PI)

Have to share this for those that have never used it. I originally tried it on my old Odroid SBC a few years back, but it kinda sucked then and I never pursued it. However, I recently gave it another go and it is has become my favourite Linux OS for a headless server.

DietPI Homepage

As the name suggests it does run on the Raspberry PI, but you can also install it on a number of other platforms (see under downloads) such as an x86 computer. The OS image is about 589MB. VMWare, Virtual Box and Hyper-V images available to. It is actually designed run via a command prompt and all the applications can be accessed via a web browser. However, you can install a desktop interface. But, where is the fun in that.

It comes with a long list of applications that can be selected for installation. The bonus is that is installs each applications and configures it correctly for the DietPI system. Some of the applications are only supported on a Raspberry PI though (like some system monitoring apps ect).

The full list of applications can be found here together with the default password and URL for each.

They include:
- Plex Media Server
- Transmission
- Deluge
- qBitTorrent
- rTorrent
- Aria2
- SABnzbd
- Sonarr
- Radarr
- Lidarr
- CouchPotato
- Jackett
- NZBget
- HTPC Manager

I've turned my old HP Microserver N40L into a DietPI server and some of the recommended applications are:

UrBackup server - to automatically backup folders and or images of my Windows PC
Nextcloud - self hosted "cloud storage"
SAMBA server

Very cool OS :giggle:

Since it took a bit of Googling to get started, here are some pointers for installing on an x86 computer.

To write the appropriate ISO image to hard drive, SD card or USB drive you can use Etcher. Note. The UEFI and non-UEFI installs are different.

non-UEFI PC

You have to connect the HDD / SSD to the PC via USB e.g. by putting it into an external enclosure.
Then fire up Ether, select the DietPi_NativePC-BIOS-x86_64-Stretch image (current version) and write it to the disk.
Put the disk in PC and boot the OS up.

UEFI based PC


This image must be installed to the HDD / SSD by using a bootable USB flash drive. During the installation you'll get an option similar to this:

-- Select "Install DietPi mmcblk0" (if you have an onboard EMMC chip)
-- Select "Install DietPi sda" (to install on the 1st HDD as detected by BIOS/clonezilla, unfortunately, we have no way of providing this info on screen, use with caution)

Select option 2 (unless you have some sort of embedded PC). Complete the installation.

Once up and running. If you are going to access the unit via SSL and WinSCP then you must use change the default Dropbear to OpenSSH under SSH Server.

To access the system from a Windows PC install Putty.

To create quick shortcut to the system, create a shortcut to Putty and then add the following to "Target" under the shortcuts properties .... "C:\Program Files\PuTTY\putty.exe" [email protected] -pw dietpi
Obviously change root the IP address and the password to your ones.

I'm not 100% sure but I think the non-UEFI OS expands the OS to the full size of the drive on first boot. Otherwise you can do it manually with the very handy DietPI-Drive_Manager.

Mounting additional drives can be a mission in Linux, but DietPI-Drive_Manager also makes it very simple to format and mount extra drives.

After that you can just go ahead an install all the apps that you want.

To access the file system from Windows and edit any config files WinSCP can be used.
 
Finally got around to seeing what all the fuss is about regarding Pi-Hole. Added to DietPi server as well.

No driver issues?

Nope everything seems to be working well. However, on every say 10th boot or so I get some sort of error where it cannot load something and I have to do a restart. But, I think that it is related to my dodgy 100 year old SSD drive :unsure:
 
With the new raspberry pi with Gigabit Lan this may finally be worth it
 
Yeah. It's only day one of using Pi-Hole so I'm still learning.

9000 clients? Damn

I have no idea. Only have 2 PC's connected. And this is just since yesterday afternoon :unsure:

Yeah that doesnt seem right, will check when I am home later to see what mine says, but I know its not that much.
 
Anyone have qbitorrent or transmission working?
Both admin passwords are not working..

Setting up a pi zero w with radarr and sonarr with qbittorrent.

Yes that client thing is wrong, not sure if it sees a DNS request as a new client even if it's from the same client, all my installations also show that wrong

Edit: Seems it does see every request as a new "Client", if you hover on the graph it then shows the client IP with the amount of requests from the clients next to it. Wonder if they will fix that

Edit2: So the graph colors shows the amount of clients, and the number is the total amount of DNS requests.... so nothing to fix I suppose

Yeah you are right, I totally forgot to check this like I said I would.
