Difference between black and white students failure rate a 'horror’

Cape Town - The number of black students who graduate from university compared to their white counterparts is totally unacceptable, Parliament heard on Wednesday.

South Africa's Statistician General Pali Lehohla on Wednesday presented the financial statistics of higher education institutions for 2015.

He painted a bleak picture that he said needed to be addressed by making education a priority.

If one looked at progression rates, he said, black people were not doing well.

In the 80s, he said, for every black graduate there were 1.2 white graduates.

Currently, for every one black person who graduates from university, there are six white people who make it through successfully.

Dropping out

"These numbers are declaring a horror, to put it bluntly. It is totally unacceptable," he said.

Lehohla blamed a high dropout rate among black students for the statistics.

"There are several reasons, but you find that their stories are the same. When a 17-year-old with no money is admitted at university and funded for education, but does not have money for food, or accommodation or some other essential, they drop out. Where else can they get money to sustain themselves?" he said to the committee.

There were instances where students failed because of partying, drugs and alcohol, he said.

"We all did that at university. But this rate of failure is not because all of them do drugs and drink. It can't be, there has to be a different explanation," he said.

Education was only number 18 on the list of priorities for politicians and it would continue to be a problem until it was prioritised, he said referring to the results of a survey conducted by his office.

Surely this stat cannot be correct.

If you consider the black to white population ratio it might be. Pretty sure there are more black students for every one white student today than there were 30-40 years ago.

uh no.. smh but i guess it depends on how you define graduate. If in the traditional sense (university) then to me atleast it makes perfect sense because.. guess what.. back then the only people who went to varsity were the ones who wanted to get a degree etc and the dropout rates all things considered would be the same.

But in the last decade the education level in schools have been dropped (in the 80's non-white potential grads had to get a decent dept to go to varsity), entry requirements are bended to make up numbers despite universities saying this would be bad, but .. universities mostly kept their standards. I'm waiting for someone in gov to say they need to do the education depts way of tackling the issue and let the failure rate percolate to workplace firing..

No buddy. Would it kill you to apply to engage you brain for a moment. He presenting data that covers a whole range of people and different scenarios of why they drop out. In other words, in some case students drops out because of partying too much, but is some cases, a different set of students drop out because of a lack of money. sigh!

I worked at bars and restaurants while studying electrical engineering full time. No money spent on alcohol.

We had people drop out mid term due to failing subjects, not because they were poor. We started 1st year with 64 in the class, 6 whites. 6 months later we were 14, of which 5 were whites. By the end of year 3, we were down to 4 from the original group of 64, of which 3 were whites.

Studying is hard for a reason.

When I studies electrical engineering full time, we has students drop out because they didn't have money for transport, accommodation, tuition etc. Most of them were black. The consequence was that more whites than blacks graduated.

Studying is expensive for a reason.
