I just find it hard to believe that both those factors independently contribute to such large numbers of black students dropping out.

And there's no need to be a dick when you converse.
If I've misunderstood something I'm happy to have it pointed out to me without the snide comments.

Another reason might be the lower requirements/standards for passing. Matric these days are way easier than back then. So maybe more whites are passing and nothing changed amongst the black populace.

Probably today's batshyte insane levels of entitlement at play, in the 80's it was much, MUCH more difficult to even get into a university if you were not white. I'd bet anyone who made it that far worked very hard not to waste their privilege.

Fast forward to today and tertiary education is seen as a right, not a privilege, so just demand it, don't bother putting in any actual academic work.

Surely this is wrong. If it was right it means that Apartheid was 6 times betters for black people getting university degrees. Considering the white population has decreased while black population has rapidly increased the figure as percentage of population should make it they are 10 times worse off.

Surely this cannot be right, even by the wildest racist's imagination

Sadly, in Feesmustfall world, white students will be blamed for being more successful. The only reason can be that white students steal knowledge from black students.

Ohh they could. I saw brilliant young blacks with a lot of promise drop out. So sad. I was just one of the lucky few ones that finished.

Combo.. lower entry bar, easier to get. Also the rate of failure needs to pegged vs student numbers or the stats are skewed. i.e. for every 1 black graduate there are 6 white graduates but when black students out number 6:1 perhaps the reason is that the graduate populous is largr and the success % is the same.. ie just sheer numbers.. i.e. its the same rate given 6x students.

i.e. whats is the black student drop out rate ? what is the white student drop out rate ?

This again makes me rethink what i said earlier.. because in the 80's the number of black students was a LOT lesser than now so question is this.. are they comparing things fairly or looking at sheer numbers?

I suspect that what he is clumsily trying to say is that the drop-out rate is six times higher among blacks - understandable given the lower university admission requirements for previously disadvantaged scholars.

In June this year when there were protests going on at the Uni close to me, I spoke to a 3rd year mech engineering student who was gravely concerned that he may not be able to catch up if the protests continued to disrupt classes.
He also mentioned that the instigators of previous protests made no attempt to catch up following these disruptions.

Many will always use the victim card as an excuse for their failure.

True, because on average black people are poorer than white.

In general more affluent students have a better chance of success. As does students with parents with tertiary education and many other factors. Obviously there is also a link between having tertiary education and being more affluent, so the two factors are not completely independent.
