Digging through rubbish bins?

Is there anything that can be done to stop people digging through your rubbish bins? I'm not so worried about people finding personal things in my trash, I'm talking about the people that pitch up every rubbish day to find things they think might be valuable to them

Last week, I bought ant poison to spray around the house (The Bayer professional range). I also used 2l soda bottles to mix paints for wood varnish. When I was done, these bottles were thrown away in the trash. Now this morning as much as I tried to chase the people away and tell them that the bottles in my trash would kill them. When I left for work this morning, I went around the block to get back to find them all ignoring what I said and had still ripped open the bags and I saw somebody running away with the poison bottle. Its just plain right stupid

Before I get the high and mighty people jumping up and down at me, sayings its poor people and they do it to survive. Its rubbish for crying out loud and a haven for diseases. Besides the fact that they throw half the rubbish out on the floor messing up the outside of your property, certain things thrown in the rubbish bins, are thrown away because they are dangerious & deadly. I know some other people might say "well dont use those poisons". Well firstly.. bite me. Secondly, even the fully organic liquid fertilser I buy at the nursery which comes in 2l Coke bottles is deadly for human consumption.

Maybe something like a magnetic lock that is opened up automatically when its loaded onto the rubbish truck?

Problem is there are usually hordes more waiting for the truck at the municipal dump...

I thought they were stopping that at dumps. I know at the two dumps close to me. Only workers are now allowed in, and we have to sign in when dumping anything

I think they taking the plastic stuff because they take it to a recycling facility and they get money for this. I dont think they taking it for their personal use.

Well this is the case for the guys in my area.

I've heard as well that people use the 2l coke bottles to sell parafin in for use on stoves and for heating. While that might not be a problem, I dont know what the effect is of the poisons added to the fumes.

When I was still on the farm, and we had Dairy cows. People would also pitch up to fill bottles with fresh milk we used to give away. If they are using bottles out of my dustbin this last week... they aint going to survive

This is one thing that you wont be able to stop no matter what you try and do.
Surely in todays age of technology we should be able to do something to secure a rubbish bin

I agree. When I moved into "town", I was not used to it. First time I saw it, I called the guys over and gave them some food. But I cant afford to do it every week and as soon as one person is gone, Another arrives

Had the same problem now the gardening service takes mine.

I'm a neat freak, they can take anything to recycle i do not have a problem with that, but why do the trash end up outside the bin and never go back in when they are finished? And then the garbage guys refuse to take the bin..:(

Why don't you squash and poke holes in the bottles then? They'll be useless to the scavengers.

Most of these scavengers take their loot to recycling depots. I think they're doing the community a service if you're not recycling yourself.

Well then the holes won't be a problem.

Try separating everything in your garbage, put the tins in a bag on the top, as well as plastics in their own bag. Hopefully they'll get the message that the rest is either dangerous or useless to their needs and leave it well alone.

We actually allow the garbage trucks to be escorted through our complex, this means the bins are never on the pavement.

Dude, Penn and Teller are magicians, so I don't put much stock in their evaluation... their methodology is flawed in that episode. Recycling is more beneficial for certain types of materials like aluminium and less so for things like plastic, but even plastic results in a nett energy saving of around 20% even when taking transportation etc. into account.

Check out last month's Popular Mechanics for a long article on recycling.

Just ignore it, the sad reality is once the rubbish is outside your house it's not actually on your property anymore.

We have the same problem infront of our complex. The other day I saw the security guy digging into the rubbish bins; so, I just think that they all do it!

So we have to live with the rubbish that gets thrown all down our driveways and streets?

I have tried, I have even packed anything usable in seperate bags and given it to the first person to arrive. But the next person just shows up and still breaks up all the other bags getting into the stuff that is deadly. I'm sure there are many other companies and places that have things much worse in thier rubbish than me as well. Sitting sorting out your own trash also takes a long time, which becomes pointless when its just ignored

I'll take a photo when I get home tonight.

About 2 months ago I actually blew a tire because of it. I was cutting wire mesh over the weekend to make place for a creeper to grow up, and tossed all the scraps into the rubbish. When I got home on the wednesday, these scraps had been tossed out and some must of landed the road. I didn't notice it until the morning when saw my tire was flat and the wire mesh had nicely wrapped itself around the tire as I drove in. Cost me 6k in new tires. My wife walked around and said you could see how it was tossed to one side, and more than likely forgotten about

I thought it was the rubbish truck guys who had just been careless, though I start taking note of whats going on, which I guess is why I have now noticed just how bad its become.

Besides that though. They still tear the bags open and toss all the lose stuff back into the bins, which cause them to smell worse than they should.
