On Thursday I decided to register on DigiChilli's site. The registration process went smoothly and I was looking at the R300pm (Spicy) account. I reasoned that since I'd prefer to pay via EFT I'd get their bank account details and add them as a beneficiary in the meantime, deciding I'd look around a bit more first and only sign up on Monday.

It seems that somehow, in my brilliance, I signed up, since today I received an e-mail with DSL login details, even though I hadn't paid a cent. So, I shrugged it off as my own silliness, logged in (my Afrihost account was cancelled last night), paid them and sent off the proof of payment and was quite chuffed with the browsing speed.

But, naturally, there are problems... Of course, why wouldn't there be? Through Pidgin, Gtalk, MSN, ICQ, Jabber -- all connect for a few seconds at most then time-out. XFire (my beloved XFire) doesn't even connect

The only IM client which (barely) functions is Skype, which seems to have major lag between you and your contacts.

Is it just me? I thought the worst of the problems were sorted by now? :wtf:

Any feedback or (constructive) suggestions would be great.

Thanks.

Didn't you read the DC threads?

I cancelled mine because of too many issues. (like you mentioned). Could browse, but nntp is blocked (for the last 3-4 days) I couldn't connect to news server (cheapernews). I have payed account with cheaper news. All my other accounts connect first time, full line speed (384)

But good luck , hopefully this will get sorted.

Of course I did. But I also read:

<snip>
Things look good on the network.

Any issues, you are encouraged to mail myself and support for resolution.

So I assumed that meant that everything is at least running decently :(

*sulks*

Take away my MSN and even my GTalk, I barely use 'em anyway. But take away my XFire??!?!

This is not how I intended to start the new decade :p

Thanks though, I hope it gets sorted as well. Long shot, but do you know what the chances are for a refund? :)

Yyyyup... logged on because Screamer is dow at the moment and i still for some insane reason have my DC a/c but it's not working at all.

Browsing is brilliant, as for the rest... 0.1kb is lucky.

creamer is a better option right now (just not RIGHT NOW) :P

I'm no longer testing. I won't get an account until tomorrow. I know that it flowed very well the last few days.

The VoIP needs some work. Secondlife still wasn't working.

When those issues are sorted out, things should look fine.

In the DC Jan thread, I posted tests done on the telkom line, right after midnight. Those patterns shown by the MyConnection PC program, of the telkom patterns, needs to be fine tuned. http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=209406&page=12

Thus far I have not been able to get the tests to work on the DC account.

The moment the tests work, the rest will.

haha... Well, the Screamer running at full 384 did sound more tempting, which is why I had originally wanted to look around a bit more before signing up. But, 'tis too late now.

I'm using my phone at the moment purely so I can log into XFire. 'tis insane :p

Good Luck.

Thanks :)

lol Lycanthrope, of course CambodiaDave would say everything is fine. Their network status on their site is "We are flying!!" As you noticed, however, they are not.

I had a paid account for December, and cancelled because it was unusable. When thing were working - all of 4 days out of the month, thing were awesome. Unfortunately the rest of the month was terrible.

If I was you, I'd get a refund and use the 300 bucks for 10 reliable gigs at Afrihost.

:/

Requesting a refund does seem to be the best option at the moment... Would have to wait until Monday/Tuesday for my funds to clear in their account anyway so all I can really do is wait and see.

MSN, Gtalk and all other IMmlyness are fine here on DC. Don't use xfire so no feedback on that.

Why start a new thread btw? Wouldn't it have been more constructive to add to the on-going thread instead?

Still dead as a doorknob here :(

Well I could've done that but, admittedly, I was more interested in drawing attention to my immediate frustration rather than adding to the already exhausted frustration of others ^.^

If you paid by EFT got to the bank and undo the transfer, cancel the DC account and you should have your money back.

Nah... According to the usage stats I've used a whopping 16MBs. Amazing stuff, eh? So I'd rather just be refunded than have them claim I used something I didn't pay for.

All I can do is wait. I really hope it just gets sorted though because not being able to use anything other than a browser is just pathetic.

I'm also annoyed with Afrihost for not responding to my e-mail requesting that my billing method be changed from credit card to debit order -.-'

*siiiigh*

It's not my year so far :D

Drop them an email with the ports xfire uses and they can probably prioritise it better.

That why steam is/was working the past couple of days - we sent them the ports, they then 'made it so'..

* What ports does Xfire use?
Xfire uses TCP/IP port 25999 to connect to cs.xfire.com.

This is the only port that you HAVE to be able to communicate on in order to use Xfire. Xfire can and will attempt to use a myriad of different UDP ports, however, and they can be somewhat random.

Game servers use various ports, usually between 4000 and 60000 UDP, which is what Xfire is receiving data from when you log on. It does this to get the ping, playerlist, map and other info that is then displayed in your Xfire client for each of the game servers your friends are playing on.

If you have the Friends of Friends option enabled, all the queries from the servers they are playing on get sent out and returned on the ports those games use.

There are 3 other features in Xfire that use UDP as well.

* Typing notification - This is a randomly negotiated port above 1024 using the UDP protocol between you and the user you are typing an IM to. This can be disabled in your Tools|Options|Chat tab.
* P2P File Download system - This is a randomly negotiated port above 1024 using the UDP protocol between you and as many as 20 other users in the Xfire network. You can disable this by going to Tools|Options|Files in your Xfire client.
* Voicechat (1:1 and Group) - This is a randomly negotiated port above 1024 using the UDP protocol between you and the user or Group voice host you are voice-chatting with.

E-mail to whom exactly?

And wouldn't CambodiaDave read my miserable little thread and go, "oooh, aaah..." and come to my rescue? :p

Somehow I feel e-mailing them and asking them to prioritise those ports would be presumptuous at best. I just want working internet, as I think does everyone else.

I think it's only cheapernews that is the issue - a friend of mine on DC has an Astraweb account and he doesn't have any issues....

I read about the "law suit" issue in the main Jan thread. Instead of just updating us, they keep quite.

Will rather just skip using them.
