DigiChilli Network Status December

Digichilli could have avoided this *resentment/anger* if they labelled the service a paid beta till all the problems were sorted out.

Ah but then you'll get people that complain because they have to pay for a "trial/beta" service.

Its in the nature of us humans to complain

Why wouldn't you want to cause trouble???? Dude, you are paying for a service they are not providing. I can't download anything, torrents on 384 line couldn't download for more than a week and now I get VERY slow speeds. It seems that everyone is getting ripped off by digichilli.

and now you are banned?????? for high usage on an uncapped acc???? I smell a law suite

If the service doesn't meet your requirements, contact them and request a refund. I am certain they would be perfectly happy to refund the R300 and cancel your account. Or, vote with your wallet and go elsewhere next month where you will get the service you want.

I am not a Spicy user, but for the past day I've been getting in the region of 20 kB/s speeds, which is a LOT better than I used to have. The network is slowly improving.

I don't want this to end up in a fight.

And yes, getting banned for high usage on an uncapped account is not acceptable.

Hi Dave

I've just sent you a PM. Please check out my account. After a power cycle, my NetGear ADSL Router reports a Successful Authentication but goes no further. No IP.

Thanks for your hard work and extensive efforts.

AUP

Any activity which threatens to disrupt the service offered by DigiChilli through "denial of service attacks"; flooding of a network, or overloading a service or any unauthorised probes ("scanning" or "nuking") of others' networks;

And ... at our discretion blah, blah, more legalspeak.

If anybody has any legal questions, send them to me and I'll forward them to our lawyer. I think this is quite clear but I may be wrong. It has happened once before.

If you believe that a person(s) with a 4Mb line can overload your network and cause the issues we have been experiencing from the start, then you should take a very careful look at what you are going to do to manage the network properly.

We are. A cool 1/2 bar of looking very carefully. BTW the bucket issue is due to Telkom's ESR's not handing out the profiles correctly and consistently. As stated earlier, we are putting in measures to effect this.

So Guys, can I ask you not to get yourselves into a froth? Anybody who thinks they have been 'unjustly' handed a temporary ban is welcome to pm me. We had/have a simple and clear choice. To limit people creating issues for others while we deal with relevant issues. Or do we allow <3% of users to screw up the network.

This is not intended as a contentious post. Just a clarification to questions asked.

It seems to me that some people have spent the past two weeks raping the DC network and having a private giggle whenever they vist the forums and see how everyone else is complaining about the speeds.

Now that this has caught up with them they come whining about getting banned. Where were you last week? Why did you not post and admit that you were raping the link at 4Mbps? Why not limit your download speeds yourself?

Given that the guys at DC have spent the past two weeks trying to get to grips with the network I think you should count yourself lucky you didn't get tossed right off the network.

There are a lot of things that still don't work. Can't play any online games without huge latency spikes. Steam, while able to connect now, is still a bit messed. Had to use another account to complete the steam update before I could log in properly. Still can't seem to get streaming audio from overseas.

That being said, browsing speeds and video streaming have been hugely improved. Much thanks for this, keep up the good work. :D

Out of curiosity, when downloading a single thread file, what causes the speeds to sometimes drop from 40KB down to 15-20KB for a few seconds? I don't seem to experience this at all when using a different account (IS or Telkom). It's not an isolated indecent either, seems to happen on all files (international).

Of course its acceptable.

Just to get this right. You want Dave and co to continue to allow you to do 15 gigs a day on an account which should only be doing less than 5. All this while your activity dramatically lowers the experience of other users.

... and all that because you believe the legal stuff might not be watertight.

Dave and co have been quite nice in saying they know its their fault, but the network experience of the whole must take priority until they can fix the throttling.

5GB? No, the AUP or advertising does not specify 5GB per day.
If we take this up with ASASA..... we all know what has been advertised and what has been experienced.

Blaaislaai joined the network after the issues started..... just btw.

Getting banned without warning is not acceptable. If they did contact me before banning the account then I would have been cool with it all.

And regards to the throttling, they advertise: " Minimum guaranteed speed 256k" . Meaning the min speed would be 25.6k, but they don't mention anything about the maximum speed. Meaning my 4MB line can go up too 420k. If the idea was to limit the speed to a maximum of 256k then they should have done that.

Yup, that's perfectly legal. Well apart from the network monitoring bit. That's illegal, according to a SA citizen being protected by the specific laws, unless a court order deems otherwise.

The 256-512 chilli service technically allows a user with a 512 line, to transfer about 6.3GB a day, assuming 51KBps down and 26KBps upstream.
That would be a legal amount to transfer. Therefore proclaiming 5GB to be "abuse" is contradictory to their statements, as well as illegal.

At the expense of the users that are managing to pull speeds that the service lets them? If DC doesn't want a user to pull 400KBps, they should limit that speed to what they said they would. They have no legal right to do this if they are not able to manage the service properly. Dave mentioned that it has been difficult due to Telkom's ESRs..... well then that is a problem they will have to sort out.
IF YOU DONT LIKE IT GET ANOTHER ISP BECAUSE YOU ARE STARTING TO PISS ME OFF BIG TIME!!!! Dave said this will done so that they can figure out the network

Logging onto afrihost... so that i can actually do some work whilst i wait for Dave to fix the international problem.

Well the letter of the law might agree with you, the spirit of things certainly doesn't.

This boils down to a simple question.

Do you think they should leave the extremely heavy users on the network to the detriment of the whole, while they implement speed limiting?

Lol.... and you are?
I am just one of the pissed off users...... and you should take a look at your keyboard. I think the CAPS lock is stuck.

Froot!

What is the issue here?

There is NO 5GIG limit on accounts. I've exercised my 'legal' discretion in deciding which users to temporarily limit to enable the other 97% to use the network. That was an arbitrary cut off point by me. What would you do with a user like this?

Total Upload: 2.68 GB
Total Download: 112.45 GB
Total Combined: 115.13 GB

This is 9 days usage and this user did not respond to the three emails sent already.

Now, I'll ask again. WHAT is the issue other than your sense of protection for the consumer? If there really is an issue I'm quite willing to possibly discuss this privately.

Note that we also have said that the ban will be a TEMPORARY BAN until we can effect those changes you say we should be doing anyway.

Again, this is NOT MEANT TO BE CONTENTIOUS, but I am trying to understand the issue here.
